Whoop whoop, we have a migrant.

We have lived here for 30 years in North Norfolk and ran ALS for 27 of those years but we never get many migrant moths (Hummingbird Hawk is not annual!) but last night we did catch one while testing LED….. Small Mottled Willow, first since 2016!

IGGLY WIGGLYS

What is the most unusual thing you have caught in your moth trap?

We have caught many butterflies and dragonflies over the years but Rhinoceros Beetles in Spain that trashed the egg trays and a Giant Banded Centipede in Italy is our most unusual…… some would say, most frightening…….

Let us know in the comments below……

We are just back from a week in Basilicata, Italy where we ran various moth traps near the village of Albano at 800m altitude. Our main aim was to continue testing LED light manufactured to our specifications and like that tested last November in Madeira with the ALS Heath Trap. Testing was done against 20w actinic (Wemlite) and our original 2x 2w LED. We are glad to say that the new LED equalled the 20w and on some nights, caught more (like it did in Madeira), so we hope to be selling this in the very near future with all mains moth traps (we will continue to sell 20w actinic as well).

Some great species encountered including several Giant Peacock Moth, Pale-shouldered Cloud, Silver Cloud, Speckled Beauty, Mythimna sicula, Adactylotis contaminaria, Hadena magnolia, Omphalophana antirrhinii, Spiny Hook-tip, Annulet and Watsonarctia deserta. Upto 77 moths per night (LED) and 44 moths per night (20w actinic) with temperatures keeping around 12c with clear skies.

Here are a selection of some of the moths. If any are named incorrectly, please let us know.

Running the 20w Compact Heath Trap in cold (3c min) conditions with a strengthening wind starting at 3am here in North Norfolk gave few moths last night. A small selection are here….. I don’t suppose we would want to fly around in those conditions either.

HAPPY EASTER

Wonderful comments on our Lepidopterist Trap:

Just a quick thank you for an excellent service and a cracking moth trap (UV12 The Lepidopterist). Ordered 00.14hrs Monday 16th March. Dispatched 07.57hrs Monday 16th March. Delivered 11.01hrs Tuesday 17th March. Trap in use 19.00hrs Tuesday 17th March. Checked trap 07.00hrs Wednesday 18th March - 14 individuals of 7 species in a small urban garden on a cold March night. The following cold night again; 37 individuals of 6 species. I’m happy with that as my first foray into the world of moths with my own trap. N.B Nuneaton
