After many years selling on Not On The High Street, I've made the decision to close my Studio Charley storefront.
As a small independent maker, this wasn't an easy decision. But the recent introduction of a monthly Service Fee for lower-selling partners has made it clear to me that small businesses like mine are no longer being valued.
NOTHS already takes over 25% + VAT in commission on every sale. Now, sellers with lower monthly sales are expected to pay an additional Service Fee if they don't reach a minimum sales threshold.
What I find most disappointing is that the first fee is being calculated using June's sales, despite sellers only being informed of the change on 7th July. By that point, June had already ended. There was no opportunity to reach the required sales threshold or to decide whether to continue selling under the new charging structure before the qualifying period had passed.
For a platform that built its reputation on supporting independent makers and small businesses, this feels like a disappointing shift away from the very people who helped make it what it is.
Running a handmade business is challenging enough. Every product is designed, made, photographed, packed and posted by me. Rising costs and platform fees already put pressure on small businesses. Adding another monthly fee for the smallest sellers feels like a step in the wrong direction.
I'd much rather put that money into designing new products, improving my shop and creating beautiful handmade toys for my customers than paying to simply keep my shop open.
So, it's time to say goodbye to NOTHS.
