Robert Crumb’s bookworms are worming and squirming, p*ering down their noses at the condition of the spine, dim eyes in the shadowy bookshop straining. My god I love looking at old books.

Wanna read one? TONIGHT? Well the swell news is that you can because Page Against The Machine, our quiet reading hour, is ON at the Norwich shop!

Slide your phone into a lady’s cowboy boot as it strains against her muscular, hotly sweating calf [steady now – Ed], and join us from five thirty p*e em. There Will Be Wine! And herbal tea for the meek creeps.

Please join us on Thursday 11 June to launch Ben Pester’s newest collection, 'Sail Away Land'.

'Sail Away Land' is the space where we might go when we’re no longer alive (sometimes only temporarily). In this uncommon and disarming collection, the characters go ‘there’ with or without knowing it. Maybe they have been living there all along without noticing – just like they hadn’t really noticed that everyone is carrying a shiny black suitcase.

These stories are about normal things – losing the people we’re closest to, forgiving them, finding love and managing to hold onto it – but also about going to parties through a door in the back of a colleague’s head, housebreaking in search of a sister’s ghost, and asking the strangers in the kitchen to resurrect you at midnight.

Ben will be in conversation with Joseph Williams, writer and critic, and visiting fellow at the UEA. There will be readings, time for audience questions, and a chance to get your book signed.

What are you waiting for?! Head on over to our website to book your FREE ticket!

Crumbs here we are in it! Here’s some tips for the day from a bank holiday inferno:

🔥 Hydrate – water is GREAT!

🔥 Pop a bowl out on your back wall with some water and a stone in so that the birds/bees/critters can also hydrate.

🔥 Make a little time – as did before walking into the oven that is the shop this morning* – to get out into one of Norwich’s beautiful green spaces and sit on the lush grass/arid blasted bare earth and read a book. Surely the feeling of taking a moment out and transporting yourself beneath some dappled sunlight is the actual cure for a lot of the ills of modern life!

Open til 4 today if you want to come fan me.

(*And what am I reading here you ask? David Keenan’s storming new novel ‘Boyhood’, which I’ll post a review of when I’m done!)

Join us on Thursday the 4th June for a double-trouble occult-and-folklore feast with novelists Justin Hopper (author of 'Dead The Long Year') and Ben Tufnell (author of 'Paradise').

Hopper's 'Dead The Long Year' is a historical novella and ghost story about art and magick in London, 1912. It follows one young woman’s night out at the Cave of the Golden Calf, briefly the HQ for London’s bohemian occult artist set. It features appearances by the likes of Arthur Machen and Nina Hamnett, and is described as "a ghost story in search of a ghost".

Tufnell's 'Paradise' is an uncategorizable eco-thriller combining elements of noir, folk horror and nature writing, addressing the most urgent of contemporary issues. It follows Nash, who — recruited by a mysterious organisation — thinks things are finally going his way. But when a job goes badly wrong, he is taken to an isolated location to await a decision on his fate. Waiting at Paradise, a crumbling cottage deep in a forest, Nash is free to leave the house but must not leave the woods...

Justin and Ben will be in conversation, discussing the themes of their books. After their chat, there will be time for audience questions and a book signing.

The event is free, but you do have to book. Head over to our events page (link in bio) to do just that!

The Feminist Book Fortnight (FBF) is an annual bookseller-led celebration of feminist and radical books led by independent bookshops across the UK. This year, we’re taking part from the 14th-28th May – and you can too!

In order to help you celebrate all things feminist writing, we have curated three feminist book bundles all of which are discounted for the duration of FBF.

Taking readers from Taiwan to Mexico, 60’s London to Palestine, the bundles feature rich narratives, the histories of feminist struggles and traditions from the global south, and pocket rockets to top-up your feminist ambitions!

Each bundle is available to buy in store from the Norwich or Aylsham shop, or can be ordered on our website - www.thebookhive.co.uk.

Like the look of a bundle, but have one of these titles already?  Why not gift it to a friend or come to our Feminist Book swap event (details on our website) and spread the Feminist Book Fortnight power!

Cold winds blow... the skies are grey... and yet, what can signify the warmth returning more than the delightful sound of bird song? (Or as is the case on London Street, specifically, the screech of seagulls – who have chicks above one of the buildings and go BUCK WILD in the late afternoon.)

Well, we have a small stack of 🔥signed indie-exclusive copies of ‘The Book of Birds: A Field Guide to Wonder and Loss’, from the much-loved team of Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris.

A great thinning of the skies is underway. Around 50% of bird species are in decline worldwide. Our dawns and springs are quieter each year than the last. An almost unimaginable abundance has been lost. It does not have to be this way –– but we will not save what we do not love. ‘The Book of Birds’ is a compendium of forty-nine bird species, from Avocet to Yellowhammer, all of which are declining or endangered in Britain.

And on every page we encounter Jackie’s exhilarating artwork, painted in watercolour and gold and animated by an extraordinary attention to detail and sense of life. Set among this dazzling flock of species are seven sections celebrating the 'Seven Wonders' that together make up the everyday miracle of 'Bird': Nest, Egg, Beak, Song, Feather, Flight and Migration. Seven years in the making, The Book of Birds is a love letter to the splendours and mysteries of birdlife, and a clarion call to halt the loss of birds from land, sea and sky.

These are signed by both Jackie and Rob, and come with a limited-edition numbered print. Want one? As ever, drop us some kind of a line: email, call, or pop in to either Norwich or indeed sunny Aylsham!

Maria Petringa is captured here looking through her album of prints all the way back in 1926, that smashing cadmium top contrasting nicely with the somewhat dour tableau. I wonder what she’s seen there?

If YOU need a place to leaf through your bound lithographs – or even read the words there too – then the glad news is that you can TONIGHT at the Norwich shop cos Page Against The Machine, our quiet reading hour is ON.

Toss your phone out the window and join us from 5:30pm. There Will Be Wine! And herbal tea for the downturned mouth.
