The Royal Arcade Norwich, built by George Skipper in 1899, is situated between the historic market place on Gentleman's’ walk and the Norwich Castle. The Royal Arcade is home to a collection of unique and specialty shop which is sure to offer visitors a different kind of shopping experience. Designed by local born architect, The Royal Arcade stands in a place of great local and historical signific

ance. The Arcade was built on the site of an infamous local inn where market place visitors could socialize and stay in comfort. Dating back to the 15th Century, The Angel Inn had a rich history and was known for providing the locals and visitors with rare and exotic entertainment. The Angel was then transformed into The Royal Hotel in 1840, which catered to the wealthy shoppers which had been drawn to Norwich because of the fashionable reputation it had gained. The hotel however did not remain on the site for long; by 1899 George Skipper was creating the shopping center you see today. By the time the Arcade was complete it contained 24 shops, a Pub and Conservatives club, all laid out in a 247 foot avenue that once was used for the Royal Hotel visitors’ horses and carriages. The Royal Arcade, still retains its original beauty despite the restoration works of the 1930’s and 1980’s, visitors can still see the original tile work and bow shaped windows which have awed visitors and locals alike since the turn of the century.
