Substrata Wines Norwich We are the conduit between sustainable producers and conscientious consumers. We bring you delicious Choosing to drink organic is a statement of intent.

It means you intend to drink good wine - wine that is vibrant, full of character and typicity. Wine that is made in the vineyard as much as it is made in the winery. In those vineyards, biodiversity and abundant life forms are encouraged, making the growing environment a positive addition to the ecosystem. It’s love your local market fortnight – and we love ours all year round…

In Norwich, the market square is the centre point, a navigational tool, and home to plucky, optimistic and sometimes opportunistic traders for nine centuries.

In that long history Substrata Wines is barely an eyelash in the blink of an eye, but is a constant in our short biography.

🌱Our first day of trading was on one of the pop up stalls in 2019 (when we could fit our entire stock in the back of a Fiesta – without folding down the seats).

We would highly recommend the pop up stalls to any entrepreneurs in Norwich as a low risk and (relatively) high footfall way to test a new business venture.

We came back for several times that Summer, before taking on a permanent stall in October 2019.

☘️We spent six years developing our client base, running tasting events and collaborating with other local businesses (including our market neighbours ) and late last year took on a bricks and mortar shop just down the hill from the market, at 15 Dove Street, where you can browse and rummage, and where we can hold our own events.

But the market stall remains, and we value the symbiosis of our near neighbours, fellow purveyors of honest food and drink

We’re next to The Fine City’s original gangsters of specialty coffee,

…across the aisle from the venerable Herbs and Spices… (Gareth even made our sign ♥️)….

🧀we back on to the Cheeseman, and we’re just uphill from Bread Source, and 🍉🌽🥕

You can buy all your essential consumbles in a square footage half the size of an express supermarket.

The quality is higher, and you don’t have to bleep your own barcodes… instead you can have a connection with another human being.

And your money stays in the local economy, rather than going into the pockets of unseen shareholders.

❗️You’ll find Substrata Wines on stall B52… row B, stall 52… think ‘love shack’ or a creamy cocktail…

🇵🇹 We’ve gone a-rummaging through our Portuguese pallets, and selected four whites and reds from Our Lady in the Dão, Elisa
to pour in our Dove St shop this weekend.

Elisa’s a retiring soul, at home in the vineyard and winery (and cheese-ery), but is rarely seen before a camera – unless she’s celebrating the arrival of a new sheep...

🌱She took the helm at her family’s vineyards in 2010. They were planted in 1956, and the grapes were sold to the local co-operative. Elisa’s vision was to build a winery and make her own estate wine, which she did for the first time in 2014.

She has had to overcome significant adversity, losing 6 of her 12 hectares of vines in the 2017 forest fires that raged through central Portugal. She has since replanted, and makes distinctive and intensely mineral wines that speak of her granite soil base.

🥂Encruzado 2024: Soft, elegant and almond-y white made from Portugal’s most esteemed white grape variety.
🍋Granitico Terroir Blend Branco 2023: Traditional Dão field blend made from the fruit of Elisa’s older vines. Lemon, lemongrass, minerality
🫑 ‘Granitico’ Terroir Blend Tinto 2021: And a partner red, with notes of Blackcurrant, fig, green pepper
🍒 Touriga Nacional 2023: Made from Portugal’s most famous red grape variety. Bottled early to capture the delicate aromas of violets & cherries

📣Join us for a glass or two this weekend📣
- Friday 5-9
- Saturday 1-5

At both sessions we’ll offer a choice of two platters to enjoy with the wine, composed of food sourced from our Dove Street and neighbours.
