Here is my new coin that arrived today. It is a Tetradrachm of the King Demetrius I. On the obverse you have a portrait of the King facing right wearing a elephant scalp head-dress and the reverse pictures a n**e Hercules holding a club and lion skin in his left hand. Demetrius I was a Greek Macedonian noble man who ended up ruling Macedonia from 294-288 BC.

The strangest elephant imagery on ancient coinage is the “elephant scalp” headdress, an adornment symbolic of the “Conquest of India”. It first appears on gold and silver coins of Ptolemy I in the name of Alexander (struck 311-305 BCE). Much later, Greco-Bactrian rulers Demetrius (c200-180 BCE) and Lysias (120-110 BCE) portrayed themselves on coins with this bizarre headgear, celebrating their Indian triumphs and asserting their connection to the legendary Alexander.
This coin is in fantastic condition considering its 2200 years old. It has great provenance and as always is for sale at the right price.

These coins were issued on the first anniversary of Italy's fascist government. The bundle of rods with an axe is called a fasces, and is a symbol of strength and power, used since Roman times. American 'Mercury' dimes have a fasces on the back.
These gold coins had a very low mintage and this one is in almost Extremely Fine condition with just a few contact marks and hairlines. As always for sale for the right price.

When is a coin not a coin
Answer when it's a token. This half penny token was issued by E Richard Bacon Cockey a Norwich business to their workers as payment it could then be exchanged for goods at local businesses. Not such a bad idea and what a wonderful picture of my home town castle.

Who says coins are round.
I have just managed to acquire a small Collection of Indo Greek Coins which include several square coins.
This one belongs to Philoxenos who ruled about 110BC
His drachms were square, another feature that was rare among Indo-Greeks but standard for Sakas, and this indicates that Philoxenus had connections with the nomads that had conquered Bactria.
It is currently for sale on eBay along with all the other square coins I have.

Mathew Boulton opened his mint in Soho Birmingham in 1788. As well as copper coinage for the UK, they also made silver coins for some of the colonies and some trade Tokens. He was responsible for making a medal in 1805 for the battle of waterloo which he then issued to all serving men at his own expense.
Boultons first Pattern Coinage the Cartwheel 2p was made in 1797 and the Royal mint was so impressed with the design they commissioned him to issue 2 and 1 penny coinage for circulation in 1799 and 1806 but the half penny and farthing remained and unissued Pattern.
Below is a beautiful example that I have just acquired of a Pattern Farthing from 1798. Made in Copper then layered with gold Gilt.

Most coins of Elizabeth's reign were hand-struck (hammered), but in the early years of her reign, a quantity of milled coins were issued, including the 1562 sixpence shown here. The man responsible for this was a frenchman named Eloye Mestrelle, who introduced a horse powered mill for the striking of coins to the Royal Mint in 1561. Unfortunately, whilst the quality of mill-struck coins was clearly far superior to those struck by hand, and was far more difficult for dishonest people to replicate or clip, they were also far more expensive to produce, and the process was much slower, making it difficult for the Royal Mint to produce enough to keep up with demand for coins. Mestrelle's services were dispensed with in 1572, and without an official employer engaging him to practice his trade, he was to end up dying on the gallows a few years later for coin forgery!
