I also manage my mum's business and we've been trying my brooches on various products, including capes like this one - very Bridgerton and The Other Benet Sister inspired!

A few weeks go I was commissioned to make a special 70th birthday brooch for a someone's mum in Australia.

The lady asked for it to include the birthstone colours for several months - dark red (Garnet), clear (Diamond), bright red (Ruby), light green (Peridot) and pink/a mixture of colours (Opal), and said her mum loved Tasmanian blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus), the Common Heath from Victoria (Epacris impressa) and Wattle (Acacia pycnantha, Australia's floral emblem), so could I also include colour elements for those.

She had a total budget of 300 AUD and we agreed that about 10 cm diameter would work as she'd pointed out some of my other large brooches she liked.

I created the brooch in the first picture (n.b. not glued to allow for changes) and she asked for it to be adjusted a little so I made a few tweaks as seen in picture 2.

All was going swimmingly, or so I thought, and I'm sure she was genuine, but maybe not as she suddenly disappeared and I couldn't contact her to ask what had happened. Who knows .....

Anyway, the upshot is that it was a learning experience, and I got to create my first custom piece which although more challenging was fun, and it will probably find its way into my Etsy shop unless I decide I love it too much! 😉
