HIS NAME IS PETE and he'll have a bunch of Bad Squiddo Minis all weekend at Britcon! Hooray! Four Score Woodworking is the name, and their game is woodworking but also stocking cool hobby things. I (Annie) will be there, but mostly playing at the TooFatLardies Workshop on Saturday, which takes up most the day. If you see me about though do come say hi, I'll be lurking around between games. But if you wanna buy some minis - head to that fella in the pic! See you there!

AUDREY HEPBURN: COMING TO HEROES OF THE DUTCH RESISTANCE (SEP 2026)

Did you know that in WW2, Audrey aided the Dutch Resistance? Only a girl of 11 when the Germans invaded the Netherlands, she saw first-hand some of the atrocities and did what she could to help fight them. Dancing was her passion, and she would dance at “black evenings”, secret underground fundraisers where the windows were blacked out and audience silence was required. There is something rather poetic about dancing for peace.

“Mum was more than a steel-butterfly; she was a battle-hardened badass.”
– Luca Dotti, Hepburn’s son

In addition, she got involved in more of the resistance activities such as carrying messages and supplies around the underground network and to allied pilots who had been shot down. She also worked tirelessly in a makeshift hospital assisting the doctors and nurses. Most wargamers will be familiar with the Battle of Arnhem, did you know a young Audrey Hepburn was there?

Much like the S.O.E, Audrey’s bonus power with the resistance was her natural camouflage of being a girl. In the early days of the French Resistance (less so later in the war), the women were overlooked as any sort of threat, which meant they could operate in plain sight. Noor Inayat Khan, for example, was caught right in the act of sending a message back to the UK by an SS Officer and winged it by saying she was just trying to listen to some jazz. Small Audrey could also be seen as neither threatening nor suspicious as “just a kid” mucking about, and this saved her life on many occasions.

This sculpt represents when she was delivering some fliers and ran into some Dutch N**i police. She began picking wildflowers and offered some to an officer.

We all know that Audrey Hepburn became a major international movie star, a massive achievement in its own right. Still, I wanted to make sure more people were aware of what she did afterwards, when she retired from the screen relatively early to pursue humanitarian work. She worked with UNICEF worldwide in over 20 countries to bring attention to the various plights, earning a series of awards for her relentless efforts.

It's been a weird year without any peegs, I'd taken for granted how much help they were with the old brain! Today I visited White Post Farm for Louise Sugden birthday, and Thehonestwargamer treated us to a small animal handling session.

Extra blessed they had my favourite type - what I call a weasel peeg! I'm sure they have many secrets and schemes hidden in the nose stripe.

Hopefully one day I'll be in a position to live with peegs again, it was so lovely to cuddle some today. I miss them so much! 🥹

Oh ten new sculpts arrive tomorrow! Wahoo!

I had a wonderful time at Sutton Hoo NT playing Mead Price with the public with James Morris and crew. Seeing people "get it" and begin a possible lifelong obsession is lovely. Especially when they're using the Bad Squiddo mini they've just painted!

Thanks Peter for running the Paint and Take, all the Dagmars got painted and it made my heart huge to see!

A brucie bonus of the trip is getting to photograph minis at sunrise and sunset by the ancient mounds. It's a special atmosphere at these times too, and a rare moment of peace. I really like this simple one of our bunny. There's lots more to show you too.

It was super cool to chat to a bunch of re enactors and experts on the era - Wulfheodenas , Lizzie Musson Charlotte Fielding . I picked up a couple books too, and we're now game for some Saxon minis action in the new year.

I returned home to the test casts of the first 10 Dutch Resistance minis, and then photos of the next 10, eee! They're super cool!

We're also on track to move shop fulfillment to a third party at the end of the month, which is a huge and exciting event. Freeing my time for more of this. And KS in September. Oh I'm also going to Haarlem for a little more research before the KS too! There's A LOT. And its ace. Hooray!

Thanks Sutton Hoo, Andy and everyone involved in making Warrior Weekend a super success.

RAVEN! Superb first day of Warrior Weekend at Sutton Hoo NT with James Morris and co. The Battle of the River Idle has been fought many times, sometimes along the lines of history and sometimes rewriting it (whenever Raedwald died in this battle I had to check to see if the mound had vanished)

We've played games with folk of every age today, and as always the youngest being the most bloodthirsty!

Many Dagmars have been painted at the Paint and Take, and its been incredible as always to see people painting away in our minis, especially so many where it's their first mini ever.

I had some brilliant chats with Lizzie Musson and Charlotte Fielding about Saxon women's clothing which has massively spurred me on to look up further and get designing some figures. A little 6/7th century between the WW2 minis perhaps? 👀

We're at Sutton Hoo all tomorrow doing it again, so if you were considering it, do it! Go ooonnn. We're playing a simplified version of Midgard which is perfect for getting dice rolling and shouting immediately!

📣 Turkey Man on Main!
Did you know that Turkey Man was once a mighty Anglo Saxon Warlord? I visited Sutton Hoo to use my time machine, and was shooketh at what I saw. I'd hoped to learn more about the King in the Mound but was met with two extra mounds! He wasn't instantly recognisable with the beard but I soon knew I was in the presence of historical greatness.

He waded the land running his fingers through the grass, presumably thinking of his wife (and child? Has he ever reproduced? There's no evidence but many rumours) while his most fanatical troops cheered around him.

His spectre will be haunting Sutton Hoo this weekend if you'd like to meet him before he fades away again.

Molly Pitcher is the name of a legendary woman who appears across battles in the American Revolutionary War, in a similar sort of way to Mad Max! She's representative of the women on the battlefield who ended up in the heat of the battle. So Molly may well have been lots of women, united under this legend.

However, there was a lady named Mary Ludwig Hays , from whom this may have originated from, creating the legend. During the battle of Monmouth in 1778 she was an absolute machine - ferrying water back and forth to the troops who were falling to dehydration in the heat. After her husband was wounded, she took over the cannon and fired til the end.

Margaret Corbin is another contender with a similar story in 1776 while defending Fort Washington. She was the first American woman to receive a pension after she was injured on the field.

And so Molly Pitcher is representative of women "pitching in" (that's not why she's called it, I just thought of that) where they aren't officially there as a solider.

She's shown here ready to load a cannon so easy to add to your existing forces.

It's happening! End of September, everything is go at the moment! For now, if you could share this with your mates or groups it would be much appreciated!

We've dipped into different countries but now we are looking at the Netherlands with more of a focus. While armed resistance is the most talked about, we're also looking at different methods such as painting, photography, sheltering people, legal support, keeping stashes, sewing uniforms, stealing babies (what?!) and using these to make some super interesting and versatile minis.

⭐️SUTTON HOO! THIS WEEKEND!⭐️ You coming? I'll be working with the James Mogsymakes team for Warrior Weekend as part of the Summer of Play. A weekend of different wargames on the grounds of Sutton Hoo, along with reenactors and other fun happenings such as PAINT AND TAKE!

Anyone can join in, it's perfect for introducing people to the hobby as we'll be playing Mead Price - a simplified version of Midgard, featuring the King in the Mound (probably) Rædwald.

There's also tours of the mounds and a cracking visitor centre, so a superb day/weekend for everyone. I had such a wonderful time last year I am hyped to be returning.

Pic is our Dagmar, sculpted and painted by Mystic Spirals Miniatures. Background is by Jon Hod - no wait! Backdrop by various historical people (it's the real King's Mound!)
