TODAY IS NATIONAL SEWING MACHINE DAY! Here's some fun facts below!

🧵In 1830, Barthélemy Thimonnier patented the first practical sewing machine, which was used to make uniforms for the French Army. However, tailors, fearing job losses, burned his factory to the ground.

🧵The phrase "the whole nine yards" is believed to come from the amount of fabric needed to make a complete, high-quality garment in the 19th century.

🧵Unlike hand sewing needles, machine needles have the eye at the tip, not the end, allowing them to pass thread through and create a loop on the other side.

🧵The 1950s are considered the "golden age" of home sewing, driven by post-war prosperity, a focus on fashion, and accessible electric models.

🧵By the 1860s, a machine could stitch a men's shirt in 1 hour and 16 minutes, whereas hand sewing took over 14 hours.

🧵Singer introduced its first portable electric sewing machine in 1921, though only roughly half of U.S. homes had electricity at the time.
Industrial vs. Domestic: Industrial machines can have specialized systems, such as a "needle feed," which helps pull the material forward while the needle is still in the fabric for higher precision.

🧵Early sewing machines were often massive treadle machines, but they quickly evolved to include portable electric versions by the early 20th century.
