The heatwave is finally coming to an end… which means we can all get back out in the garden without melting 😅

If you fancy adding something a little different while you’re out there, have a look at these.

Charlie explains how we grow these Rudbeckia here at Welland Vale and they’re such an unusual one 🌞

The colours, the shapes, even the flowers on the same plant can look slightly different. They’re coming into their own now, flowering through late summer and bringing some much-needed colour as other things start to fade.

They’re one of those plants that are much better appreciated in person.

Pop in, show one of the team this Reel and they’ll point you straight towards them. 🌿

Stamford & Rutland Garden Maintenance Ltd have created their beautiful ‘Multum in Parvo’ show garden for the Rutland Flower Show and we’re very pleased to have supplied the plants that have brought their design to life.

Wasn’t that solar eclipse cool? 🌘

Do you know what else Annie thinks is really cool? Grasses 😂
..and after the voice note she sent us explaining exactly why she loves them, we thought it deserved a Reel of its own.

They look good, they move beautifully in the garden, there are loads to choose from! Particularly relevant after the weather we’ve been having as many ornamental grasses are wonderfully drought tolerant once established.

We could tell you the rest… but Annie and Angela do a much better job of it. Watch the Reel for Annie’s full case for why your garden might be missing a grass or two 🌾

Are you already a grass convert, or do you need convincing?

Sorry, we’ve got to say the C word … 😅

If you fancy digging up your own potatoes for Christmas dinner this year, now’s the time to get them planted.

Our Christmas seed potatoes are in, ready to plant now for a festive harvest later in the year. And yes, we know it’s August… we promise we’re not getting the decorations out just yet. 😂

Pop in and have a look at the varieties we’ve got available 🥔

We've officially been nominated for Garden Centre of the Year and we're so grateful.

Whether you've been visiting us for years, only recently discovered us or you've found inspiration through our posts, thank you.

Every visit, every kind word and every bit of support has helped Welland become what it is today.

If you think we're deserving of the title, we'd be incredibly grateful if you could spare a minute to vote for us.

We've added the voting link to our bio to make it nice and easy.

Thank you for supporting an independent, family-run garden centre.

We honestly couldn't do it without you. 💚

Charlie’s back in the bedding tunnels with three plants he thinks are well worth making room for...

Although he's made a convincing case for all three plants, which isn’t especially helpful if you only came in for one.

Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ is a great choice for a sunny border, growing tall with plenty of soft blue colour.

Sorbaria ‘Sem’ starts with bright, colourful foliage before turning greener through summer and producing lovely white flowers.

Then there’s Miscanthus sinensis, an ornamental grass that adds height to the back of a border and keeps looking good through winter.

Which one would you choose?

July was hot, slightly chaotic in the best way and very, very busy 😅

We’ve been out at garden exhibitions looking for new plants and ideas, somehow kept everything going through the heatwaves, welcomed lots of new faces and shifted more trolleys of plants than we’d care to count.

There were butterflies with a side of brilliant summer colour.....plenty of tea and chocolate… and Annie did briefly become a hanging basket.

Have a flick through to see what July looked like behind the scenes at Welland Vale 🌿

Before this became the garden centre you know today, it was four acres of plant production.

These photos take us from the mid-1980s, when the growing ground was first being laid out, through to the retail tunnels being stocked ready for opening in 2014.

1. Annie’s dad and Steve Dexter preparing the four acres of land ready for plant production in the mid-80s.

2. A view across the old growing tunnels. This is now where much of our retail area stands.

3. Inside those tunnels, where they grew conifers, Dutch crop azaleas and plenty of Pieris. Two-litre Pieris were brought in, potted on during autumn and grown ready to sell the following spring.

4. Fast-forward to 2014 and the tunnels you’ll recognise today, being filled with stock ready for opening.

A lot has changed but growing good plants has always been at the heart of Welland.

Does anyone remember visiting us when this was still the production nursery?
