The same thing keeps coming up recently and it’s making me question my whole business….

When we first started out all those years ago the aim was to be the best we could be as a cake decorator. This meant practicing different cake styles, learning new techniques, and of course perfecting our flavour combinations.

Today we get told more and more that we need to find a niche, focused just on one thing ….. and NOT doing this is basically death ☠️
(especially on social media because the algorithm can’t put you in a box of your idea clients).

I get that, it’s logical right….. the best way to match you with (what a computer thinks is) your target audience is to focus on ‘the’ thing you do……
But ‘the’ thing can’t be varied or it doesn’t know where you belong.

So a cake decorator is too varied, but if I specifically make Lambeth cakes, that’s a box I can fit into…..

This makes me want to SCREAM 😱!!!!

I’m proud of the company we are today, that we have the knowledge, skill and history to be able to turn our passion into edible works of art of all varieties. When we design your cakes we can 10O% deliver the results.

Buttercream ✔️
Fondant ✔️
Handmade figures✔️
Sculpted cakes✔️
Royal icing✔️
Vintage✔️
Modern✔️

Sure there’s styles we enjoy making more than others but there’s certain chocolate bars I prefer eating over others….. I still indulge in them all with the same enthusiasm, and more so if don’t have the same one all the time.

This use to be the standard, to be able to call yourself a professional cake decorator, but the world has changed and is currently hyper focused on you being in a niches.

It’s time to go back to thinking outside of the box.

Some call it old school, some call it outdated, some say it will be our downfall, I call it our biggest strength.

We love the variety of cakes that we are commissioned to make. There is never a dull day and it means we keep going from strength to strength, continuing to hone our existing skills while still learning new ones.

Hands up if you though that one person with an allergy meant the whole cake needed to be changed so suit ✋🤚

We keep seeing our clients tie themselves up in knots when we ask the inevitable question….
Are there any allergies we need to be aware of?

Stop trying to please everyone when there’s no need (and it’s pretty impossible). Unless it’s the birthday boy or girl let’s add a matching cupcake or 2 and move on with your plans.

If you agree like this post.

‘I just want a medium size cake…..’

OK let’s fix that to something we can both understand.

A ‘tall cake will generally serve twice the portions as a ‘normal depth’ cake as we recommend cutting taller cake in half first to make cutting the portions easier.

The cake pictured is OUR ‘tall’ 6 layer cake. But this means nothing as everyone’s layers can be different depths, so let talk hight instead …..

6” tall x 6” round = up to 28 (a bit more if square)
6” tall x 8” round = up to 56 (a bit more if square)
4” tall x 6” round = up to 14 (a bit more if square)
4” tall x 8” round = up to 28 (a bit more if square)

Save this so you’re ready when the dreaded question comes….
‘What size cake would you like?’

Fear of the unknown, especially when it comes to ordering a cake can put the most confident person under pressure.

Don’t worry we got you and the first step is easy.

DOOM SCROLL PINTEREST!
I’m kidding (sort of, we’ve all been there 👀)

Find one or two inspirational pics from the internet (Google images, Pinterest, Safari etc) so we can see what style of cake you are potentially looking for. Then send them over or bring them into the shop.

It’s doesn’t have to be perfect (we prefer it not to be with all our cakes are bespoke to you. Who really wants a copy of what someone else has already had, your worth more than that and your cake should be about you not someone else).

Step one done ✔️

Then we take you through the rest of the process. No trick questions, and IT’S OK TO NOT KNOW! It’s our job to help you figure out.

We’ll help you understand :-
What size cake is best for your needs,
What flavour you would like (Spoiler it’s not just fruit or vanilla)
What theme, design or style feels right
and what depth suits the design best (never been more relevant these days this one).

And everything in between.

There’s no stupid questions, there’s no shame in not knowing. Just take a breath, start with finding a pic or 2 and let’s take it from there.

Save this post as a confidence boost when you’re starting your cake journey and send me that pic you’ve got on your phone to get started.

Let’s talk about common problems our clients face that we make disappear.

The biggest by far is the fear of the unknown.

‘What if they ask me loads of questions’?
‘What if I don’t know what I want’?

You don’t need to know everything (that’s our job), we just need a simple starting point.
The occasion, a colour scheme, theme or just a little about the person who it’s for, gives us a great starting point allowing us to then guide you from there.

Next up, the size debate.

We’ve all seen the posts recently where someone asks for a ‘normal size’ cake, or ‘the same as the picture’ only to be made to feel stupid.

It’s true that you can’t tell the size by a picture, (especially the AI ones) but as a baker, with many years under my belt, there’s always tell tail signs or a simple question that resolves this issue without the embarrassment.

Another is feeling uneasy about making payment, especially if you can’t make it into our shop.

We hear you, so we upgraded our card machine to allow us to send a secure pay by link straight to your phone. No reading our card number out, know one looking over your shoulder, you activate the link when your ready and we get a message when payment is received. ✔️

Last one for now is, what do you do when it comes to collection or delivery?

Cakes are expensive, delicate works of art so we understand when feeling nervous picking them up from the shop.
But what about what comes after that? Getting it secured in the car, driving carefully to the venue, getting it back out of the car, up the steps, through the door, to the room, out the box and finally safely onto the stand or display…..(your sweating just thinking about it). Not to mention the time involved when you’re attending the party and still need to get ready yourself. 😱

Too stressful, too much at risk, too little time….
Not too much for us.
(Plus if something does go wrong, we have the experience to fix it, so no need to make a tearful phone call or mad dash back to the shop).
