Multi-Purpose Mahonias!
For a multi-purpose all year-round shrub, Mahonia is definitely on the list to consider!
Not just a tough and very hardy evergreen with striking green, spiny shaped foliage, Mahonia thrives in shade and damp soil so is ideal for planting in difficult to grow areas.
However, its best feature are the insect attracting, flowers produced late in the year providing an important source of nectar for active pollinators when there’s little else to choose from. The flowers are followed by small dark blue berries that are popular with the birds, making Mahonia a valuable shrub for a wildlife friendly garden.
New to the Plant Bench this weekend are these two super quality Mahonia varieties, yellow flowering, Meteor ‘Hillmah’ and the very attractive new variety ‘Junglewhisper’ with unusual tropical coloured flowers.
