'Alternative Walk', Hand & Machine Embroidery by Jan Beaney

Jan’s work for this exhibition is based on observations of Burgh Island in early Spring. Her aim is to capture the essence of the location, not a literal interpretation, but just an appreciation of some humble, intimate and quiet memories of a special place. Jan machined on a soluble material to create a unique cloth to support layers of machine and hand stitches.

Eco printed scarf by Jane Hunter

"My work is a culmination of a lifelong love of nature, creativity, colour and textiles. I studied constructed textiles for my degree and have continue creating textiles investigating techniques ever since. Ecoprinting is a technique that I came to more recently that combines many of my loves and interests, nature , natural dyes, and the happy accident that contributes to creativity.

Ecoprinting is a method of applying colour and leaf patterns to textiles using a combination of traditional natural dyeing techniques and contact printing with the foliage. The leaves and plants I use are mostly foraged in my local environment.

There are always surprises and the colours can change with the rhythm of the seasons and new plants and flowers are discovered to add to the soft, natural palette. The process from the beginning, foraging for the foliage, to the end, the great reveal of the steaming bundle, delights me. It is a very accessible technique and I enjoy passing on my knowledge and passion through workshops to groups or individuals." - Jane

Ludlow Castle, Embroidery by Kate Tarling

"I’m a self-taught artist and although in hindsight I would have loved to have studied textiles, instead I studied geography and went on to train and work as a newspaper journalist. I like to think now that my textile work reflects my early career - my maps are all about a sense of place and stitching memories into a landscape. I love sewing in the connections we all make with our surroundings and creating a piece of art that has meaning. Most of the maps I make are commissioned and now I make maps of places from all around the world including Europe, Australia, North America and one piece has even flown into Space."

Feltmaker Susan Mulcock will be demonstrating in the gallery this Saturday 15th, 11am to 2pm as part of the Shropshire Guild of Designer Makers exhibiition.

Susan is a felt-maker who enjoys exploring a wide range of aspects of felt-making. Having worked with wool, drawn and painted landscapes for many years, on discovering felt-making she found an ideal medium to show the depth, colour and texture of her subjects. She has developed a process of laying out individual coloured tufts of dry wool applied like separate brushstrokes. She uses a wet-felting technique with hand-dyed merino wool into which she lays a variety of hand-dyed, toning natural fibres and fabrics . When felted, the piece acquires a different nature, the inlaid materials combining with the wool to produce sometimes unexpected textures and effects, adding shine or relief to the matt wool. These are then machine and hand-embroidered to develop the features that have emerged during the felting process.

Moss Grows, Mixed media textile sculpture by Ali Pickard

This collection is a selection of smaller works that revolve around Ali Pickard’s core themes. Central to her art are explorations of overlooked fragments of history, especially women’s history, and a curiosity of language, particularly of lost or lonely words. Her creations often feature half- creatures—beings poised between worlds, occupying a space that is both recognisable and elusive. These figures are presented alongside sculptural representations of elements from the natural world, together forming a collection that gently blurs the boundaries between the familiar and the mysterious.

Field Notes IV, Tapestry by Jill Walker

These small tapestries are quiet observations gathered through time spent walking and foraging in the landscapes I call home. Working slowly by hand, I use weaving as a way of bringing together collected leaves and natural materials, memories and my understanding of place.

The materials themselves become part of the narrative. Daffodil leaves and grasses are woven directly into the pictorial landscape, while gathered seeds and plant materials are used to dye paper yarns. Through the slow rhythm of weaving, these elements carry traces of season, memory and landscape. Dampened grasses describe the wings of moths, while woven marks translate pressed leaves from a personal herbology. Rather than depicting nature from a distance, the work emerges through an intertwined relationship with the materials and places from which it is made.

Presented together as Field Notes I–VI, the pieces reflect my ongoing interest in how careful acts of making can deepen our connection to place. Through the slow accumulation of thread, these small observations become records of attention, inviting viewers to pause and look more closely at the quiet resilience and beauty of the natural world.
