The van reverses straight into the building rather than sitting out in the yard, and everything is destroyed to a certified standard with a certificate of destruction to go in your file.

Nobody ever saw the filing.

Ships' logs are one of the oldest record keeping formats we have, and the reason for them has not changed. If it is not written down, it did not happen.

The van is locked inside a secure cage before anything is unloaded. Access points are alarmed and monitored. Every door is controlled, and every one of them is logged.

None of it makes a good photograph. All of it is the reason your records are still exactly where you left them.

Nobody has ever asked us this.

ISO/IEC 21964, formerly DIN 66399, sets seven security levels for shredded paper. P-1 to P-7.

P-1 permits strips up to 12mm wide. P-7 permits particles of no more than 5 square millimetres, which is smaller than the full stop at the end of this sentence.

Most office shredders manage P-2 or P-3.

On this day in 1859, the largest solar storm ever recorded hit Earth. Telegraph offices across Europe and North America went down. Some operators took shocks off their own equipment, some machines carried on working after the batteries had been disconnected, and the aurora was bright enough to read a newspaper by.

It was, in effect, the first recorded data outage.

Every system fails eventually. That is not a reason to panic, it is a reason to know where your records actually are and who can get to them.

Bank holiday bonus. ISO 27001 fact #4: the 2022 update cut it from 114 controls to 93. Even the standard about keeping information tidy needed a clear-out. Retention schedules come for us all.
