Friday 15thMay
Did You Know This?:
A couple of weeks ago, we were over in Portugal and popped up to Óbidos for a little mooch around… by the way, if you haven’t been to Óbidos you should go!
Just outside the fortified gates to the old town, a group of men were handing out armfuls of a beautiful yellow-flowered shrub. The scent was incredible, pungent and sweet, almost like jasmine, and it filled the air.
Curiosity got the better of me, so I went over to find out more.
It turned out to be Portuguese broom, or giesta, a wild yellow flowering plant that is common in Portugal at this time of year. What followed was the most unexpected and beautiful story, one I think will stay with me for a long time.
On the night of 30th April into 1st May, there is a long-standing Portuguese tradition called As Maias. People place yellow flowers, often giesta, on doors, windows and balconies.
The meaning is simple, but deeply symbolic, to protect the home from bad spirits and misfortune, and to welcome in luck, light and the new season.
So, the men weren’t just handing out flowers. They were sharing a gesture of protection, renewal and hope.
I brought my gorgeous bunch of giesta home, gave some to each of our neighbours, and placed some on our door and put the rest in a vase.
Don’t you just love finding out something new, as they say, every day is a school day… although I wasn’t really a big fan of school!
Hope you have a beautiful weekend.
