A small change of plan for tomorrow 📚

Because of the weather, Gloucester Green Market has been cancelled.

But we’ll still have a busy bookshop day: we now have the keys to our new space on Park End Street, so we’ll use the time to start planning the layout, organising the stock and imagining how the space will work for click & collect, French lessons and writing workshops.

It feels very real now.

We’ll be back at Gloucester Green Market on Saturday 31 October.

See you then. 📚🇫🇷

What should I read first in French? 📚🇫🇷

It’s one of the questions we hear most often at the market.

And the answer isn’t necessarily a children’s book — or a classic.

A good first book in French is one that makes you want to keep going: an interesting story, accessible language, fairly short chapters, and enough context to help when you don’t understand every word.

That’s why we’re gradually marking our French books by reading level: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

And one small piece of advice: don’t wait until you understand every word.

Reading in another language begins when you can follow the story — not when you can translate every sentence.

I’ve also created a free guide to help you choose a French book at the right level for you.

Looking for a particular French book? 📚

Not everything is already on our shelves — but we can often order it for you.

French novels, children’s books, graphic novels, books for learning French… if you have a specific title in mind, just send us a request.

When a book is available through our UK suppliers, it can usually arrive quite quickly. Other titles can be ordered from France.

We’re building the stock little by little, but we also want the bookshop to grow around the books our readers are actually looking for.

Today I’m preparing the flyers for our November creative writing workshops ✍️
Each session is deliberately small, with just 6 places in person and 6 places online.
I wanted to keep the groups intimate so there is real space to write, ask questions, share if you want to, and receive individual guidance.

There will be two levels:
🇫🇷 Intermediate French (B1–B2)
✍️ Advanced French & Francophone
In person in Summertown, Oxford, and online.

The November programme is now open

Saturday means Gloucester Green Market 📚🇫🇷

We’re here again today with a growing selection of French books: classics, contemporary fiction, children’s books, graphic novels, bilingual books, books for French learners, and English editions of French authors.
Every week, new titles arrive, so the stand changes a little each Saturday.
If you’re in Oxford today, come and have a look, ask for a recommendation, or simply stop by and say bonjour.

A new series of creative writing workshops is coming this November ✍️

For the first time in three years, I’m opening workshops focused entirely on creative writing — in French, in small groups, and with plenty of space to experiment, play with language and see what can emerge on the page.

There will be two levels:
🇫🇷 Intermediate French (B1–B2)
✍️ Advanced French & Francophone

You can join in person in Summertown, Oxford, or online.

Each session lasts 90 minutes and is limited to just 6 participants per format.

The first November themes are now online.

Some are second-hand, others are new, and little by little they’re being added to our online bookshop and to the selection we bring to the markets.

And from 8 November, you’ll also be able to visit us at our space on Park End Street.
We’ll have regular opening hours on:
📍 Tuesdays, 10am–1pm
📍 Fridays, 10am–1pm

You’ll be able to browse the stock, collect an online order, ask us to order a particular book, or simply come and talk books with us.

Visits will also be possible by appointment outside those hours.

It’s not a traditional high-street bookshop, but it will finally be a place where you can come and discover more of our books in the centre of Oxford. 📚🇫🇷

Small change of plan this week 📚

We won’t be at Oxford Brookes tomorrow, exceptionally.

But we’ll be back at Gloucester Green Market this Saturday, from 9am to 5pm, with all our usual selection of French books: fiction, children’s books, graphic novels, books for French learners, bilingual books and English editions of French authors.

So if you were planning to come and see us this week, Saturday is the day.

See you at Gloucester Green — and come and say bonjour. 🇫🇷

A quieter Sunday at the bookshop 📚
Today I’m continuing to add books to our online shop — checking titles, editions, prices and categories, and making sure everything is easy to find.
It’s one of the less visible parts of running a bookshop, but an important one.
Little by little, more of our French books are becoming available online.

You can browse the bookshop here:
