One of the best - if not THE best - living fiction writers. Hilary Mantel's writing thrums with energy; from the Thomas Cromwell series synonymous with her name, to her essays and short stories. Everything she does is pretty much miraculous.

My favourite novel of hers is The Giant O'Brien - an aptly named story centered around an Irish bard with gigantism, who's body is coveted by famous (real life) surgeon, John Hunter.

It's a tender and bleak look into Anglo-Irish history: superior gazes and cruel actions. And it's a novel about storytelling; how our lives survive our bodies.
