A good informative description clip from this reputable American company of the various leather types and the care and repair there of.

I have been in the leather upholstery trade some 48yrs+
I have had many positions in the various aspects of the trade.
In the latter years of my working for other companies.
I decided to diversify.
So I went on a technical leather repairs and refinishing course to Italy to learn more about the natural materials I was working with.
Leather and its various types and properties.

I came back from Italy with a treasure chest of interesting and valuable knowledge.
Then not long after I went on a further course at the BLC British Leather Confederation in Long Eaton, England.

On a side note on this particular course.
We were shown around a secure laboratory which was surgically clean.
Like a huge operating theatre.
On the various tables there were items of articles made of leather.
On the first table was a pair of Oliver Cromwells fine leather gloves.
They were in for restoration of the filigree cuffs that had degraded over the years.
The professor said they had to tan a piece of leather with albumen. Which is from egg whites. As this is what they used back then.
They even had to make a very fine knife to hand cut out the filigree to get a good seamless match.

Another another table was a leather suitcase from the Titanic...

On another table was a saddle from Robert The Bruce period in history.
The saddle was made of think oak lats, straw and leather.
It took a technician three months to clean it using only cotton buds...

On another table a long pointed leather shoe.
(Think Robin Hoods shoes)
But these were from some famous Irish person.
Hundreds of years old.

Lastly, I went into a sealed temperature controlled room to have a look through an electro microscope.
It was a huge machine indeed.
I zoomed in on a sheep tick that was clinging to a sheeps hair follicle.
I zoomed into the ticks knee joint that was bent.
I then zoomed in further and deeper into its knee....
I could then see tiny miniscule ticks inside the knee joint....unbelievable magnification.

The Argentinian Government were having huge problems with sheep ticks in their country.
Hence they needed the BLC to look into the problem.

I have many more stories of my time in the upholstery trade.
Lots of commissions for famous people and a thankyou letter from Harrods.
Ive had a few Coutts Bank cheques from famous people.
Wish I had photo copied them to put up in my upholstery workshop / studio.
Great conversation pieces.

I couldnt wait to show you this G Plan wingchair Ive just bought.
I bought it because ergonomically it sits like a dream.
Big and comfortable.
Think Horlicks chair but as a wingchair 😆

I am pondering a warm rich brandy leather Full grain aniline pull-up leather for that older distressed look.
Paired with a mid green Herringbone flatweave.

Looks wise. Think country gents shooting jacket.
Leather patches on the arms and wings.
Thats all your getting for now 😆
Watch this space.
The last chair I posted is on the bench next.
Waiting on the tannery....

Evening reader.

Next up...! This unusual Edwardian Office / Boardroom chair.
Shown here in its original pigmented leather in a mid blue tone.
The leather is dry and brittle due to age and the way that they tanned leather back in the day.
Modern method tanning and its technologies have come on leaps and bounds over the years.
Chrome tanned upholstery leathers are much more robust and tactile now.
Oils and other emollients
are added back into the hides after process to give back suppleness.
Which in turn gives the leather that right amount of stretch thats needed in upholstery.
Particularly deep buttoning work and severe compound curves.

Leather is anisotropic.
Which is a posh word for it having no warp and weft like fabrics have.
Each hide varies in thickness, strength and suppleness across the hide from the backbone which is thicker and has less stretch.
To the belly which is much softer and therefore much more stretch....
Belly leather should not be used on high traffic areas such as arms or cushion plates.
It can be used on cushion side borders and zip strips.
If you have an area of shiney, crepey stretchy leather on your cushions.
Its been cut from the belly of the hide.
It can delaminate and the top pigment layer can crack open due to stretching out....

The customer chose the same colourway.

Look closely at the details.
Not very good in my opinion. It will be easy to make improvements.

Afternoon reader me again 👋😆

Just adding a few more before & after pics of a customers chair.
Reupholstered in an ethnic pattern tapestry.

As with most if not all old traditional upholstery.
The inner hidden framework is generally split. Caused by the numerous tacks all concentrated in a small narrow rebate....

Tacks are made of mild steel. The tannins in the wood, mainly oak.
Are acidic and they attack the tacks and cause them to rust out and drop out.
It was all they had back in the day.
Also the jute webbing used in sprung seats is a reed grown in india.
Jute web stretches early on in its life. It can also rot around the nails due to the nails rusting....
This is why you come across lots of traditional upholstery that has sagged.
Tacks and traditional methods have their place.
As do modern methods and materials in my 47yrs + experience.

A small selection of my favourite types of fabrics to use on accent chairs and headboards.
A great fabric choice to make that visual impact to a room or bedroom.
All printed velvets on a heavy base fine cut velvet.
A lovely tactile quality to this range.

As usual the photos dont translate that well in clour saturation.
They are much more vibrant and snappy in real life.

Just a few bits n bobs of some recent small jobs...
A lovely customer baked me some lovely cream cakes as a thankyou...
I ate two honest 😏
No I really did honest 😲

I recovered 8 diners. That were covered in that oh so familiar dk brown faux leatherette that flakes off with age.
I recovered them in a mid grey chenille acanthus leaves with a subtle herringbone background weave. A lovely thick chenille with a quietly classic look.

I have half a roll of this left instock.

Here we have an excellent example of a truly lovely Ottoman coffee table stool.
A four by two mahogany frame sat on heavy oak turned legs, brass castors to finish....an impressive piece indeed in the right setting...
I have a few coffee table ottomans instock to buy.
Covered in kilim design carpet.

I make all of my own frames. Five grown men could easily stand on these ottoman frames....more if there was room 😆
