I’ve been a little quiet on here lately… and this is why! 🐑
I’m absolutely delighted to have been accepted for Oxton Art Fair at the Williamson Art Gallery in November.
I am quietly working away, creating a whole new flock of pottery sheep especially for the fair.
Yes, fewer posts lately, but there’s been plenty happening in the studio!
I’ll be sharing some of the new work as it takes shape over the next few weeks. 🐑🤎

In the studio today adding more finishing touches. 🖌️
This tea caddy just needs it’s transparent glaze before it can leave the flock 🐏🐑🫖☕️

A sheep gathering vase 🐏🌾🐏

But see how much of a process it was just to get the finishing touches right!

Photo captions:
1. Finished painting and ready for a transparent glaze. This is the result after all the steps below.
2. Wetting the piece: water gives the illusion of a glaze and deepens the colours. Sometimes the glaze is all it needs, other times it wants an extra something.
3. Using my iPad again as an aid to visualise how my ideas would look. Marking up the photo lets me try out extra colour without touching the pot itself — once I commit on the pot, there’s no going back!
4. Trying white accents around the rims... yuk!!
5. Trying dark accents, and sanding back the base (you can see the terracotta-coloured fine pen lines).
6. Just the base? ...No, it felt unbalanced.

How I fit an entire flock of sheep into a pottery kiln…
Fifty-nine of them 🐑🐏!!
Three shelves.
One very carefully planned firing.
I won’t lie : I always hold my breath a little at this moment.
But they all made it. Every last sheep.

A slab of brown terracotta, torn at the edges, a sheep sketched straight into the clay, and then the end curled around to hold a candle.

This little candlestick feels like it came straight from the earth where the flock gathered 🕯️🐑

I submitted my application to the Oxton Art Fair today, , something I have been quietly hoping to do for a while now.
📸Choosing which photographs to submit was harder than I expected. I had a group shot of my pottery pieces that I felt showed how cohesively my work sits together, but it was taken before the final transparent glaze had been applied, therefore it wasn’t suitable.
So I tried something I had not done before and asked AI to add the glossy finish. It was more impressive than I expected. But as an artist I could see exactly where it fell short, and in the end I could not bring myself to submit it. It did not feel right.
🤨There is so much creativity and skill that goes into making original work, and I find myself increasingly uncomfortable with how freely AI is used, often with very little thought given to the original artists and makers whose work made it possible.

Anyway. The application is in and I am excited. Swipe to see the AI version alongside the original unglazed photograph, and you can judge for yourself.

A local flock I walk past regularly, always stopping and watching.

The ewe watched me carefully, steady and still, while three lambs did exactly what lambs do. Curious, nibbling, barely able to decide which was more interesting, me or the grass.
When I saw latest posts, I stopped again. Because he had put into words something I have felt so many times standing at that gate, that quiet privilege of being watched by a sheep. Accepted, but never quite trusted.
His painting of a ewe and her lambs in a quiet corner of the Welsh countryside feels very close to this moment. I’d encourage you to go and read his words, they are really rather beautiful.
It struck me too, that this is exactly why I make pottery sheep. That stillness. That watchfulness. That ancient, gentle wildness that is somehow still there in even the most familiar field. 🐑🏺🌿
