An unreasonably stylish mid-century carriage clock, by Jaeger-LeCoultre.

A wonderful hand painted miniature portrait, featuring Elizabethan pin-up, Sir Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester. A close friend of the Queen (her ‘Sweet Robin’) though deeply unpopular during his lifetime, not least for all the controversies and jealousies which he caused. The suspicious death of his wife is up there.

By reputation, however, a ‘singular well-featured’ fellow, as portrayed in a 16th century original by Steven van der Meulen, and later miniaturised here by somebody in the school of George Perfect Harding, the renowned c19th virtuous copyist of significant portraits. What a name. And what a perfect little portrait this is, detailing not quite all 6 feet of Sweet Robin, in spectacular courtly garb. The gilded gesso frame gives the whole thing a suitable fanfare.

It is understood that Robert’s last hand scribbled note, hurriedly issued at the time of his death post-Armada, was kept in a casket beside Elizabeth’s bed until the day she died in 1603. Perhaps this chap deserves wall space.

A becalming Cornish seascape. Patchwork fields in autumn shades, rolling gently down to a level sea.

Cornwall has the largest length of coastline of any county in the United Kingdom. It varies in character wildly, from sun-kissed shallow shores to vertigo inducing cliffs of black basalt, gulls crying, waves crashing.

This clear and vivid picture window captures something of the more clement Falmouth waterways, notable for the gentle way in which pasture tumbles onto shore.

A large, delightful pair of Victorian Staffordshire Collie dogs, proudly standing four square. Glossy coats, a superb line and perfectly well trained. Unlike a basset hound, these dogs will not dig your carpets to the weft, nudge you constantly through supper, or sleep diagonally across your bed breaking wind. These are infinitely more well mannered. Also somewhat rare, beautifully made, and with original glass eyes. A unique gift.

An old Persian manuscript folio, likely from Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh, ‘The Persian Book of Kings’, an epic poem in 50,000 couplets, telling the story of a pre-Islamic Iran.

In its pages are stories of national triumphs, failures, courage, cruelty, perfect love and deep grief. A literary masterpiece on a par with the Homeric epics, with Dante and Shakespeare, not least for its ability to bring a whole culture into view.

This single folio, exquisitely painted in bright watercolour and highlighted in gold, depicts an elephant carrying dignitaries, with horsemen and an archer, while a standard flaps in the wind. Clearly an arrival of some import.

The related couplets are visible to the reverse, written in a fine calligraphic Nasta’līq.

Possibly anything from Safavid to Mughal period. Certainly a little Persian gem.

A glorious onyx clock. Adorned with a brilliant array of neo-classical features, sporting gilt brass furniture in the Greek taste, and topped off with a Wren style dome. What’s not to love. Weighty, stately and unashamedly grand. An exquisite temple to time.
