We recently trialled a new type of bedding for our four-legged friends in the Dog and Mounted Section.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and ELITE Paper Solutions , a social enterprise in Merthyr Tydfil that supports 70 disadvantaged and/or disabled staff and volunteers into training and local employment, worked in partnership to carry out a pilot programme which repurposed waste cardboard into pet bedding.

ELITE Animal Bedding is an environmentally friendly and less dusty alternative to traditional materials like wood or straw.

💬 Tristan Davies, Tri-Force Environmental Manager said “During 2023 I was fortunate to be working with Dr Tom Powell from the NHS as part of the Circular Economy Innovation Communities (CEIC) group and Cardiff Metropolitan University regarding cardboard waste in Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

“Through CEIC I was able to get involved in this valuable project with our Dog and Mounted Section and arrange for ELITE to run a pilot to provide equine bedding.

“This is a great example of successful collaborative work which promotes modern circular economy thinking, positive action, and aligns with our ‘Blue Dot’ Climate Emergency Strategy. We are looking forward to working on similar projects in 2024.”

💬 Inspector Elen Reeves, Dog and Mounted Section said “It’s been fantastic to try a different type of bedding. We’ve found that it’s lower in dust, so for some of our older horses, or horses with certain medical conditions it’s been working really well. Also, staff are breathing in less dust while mucking out every day.

“It’s been great that we’ve been able to get involved in such a positive project, we are still trialling the product, but will definitely consider using it moving forward.”
