Benedict Davies, multidisciplinary conceptual artist, just asked us not to think of an elephant. And guess what?

Exactly. We’re thinking about an elephant. 🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘

Benedict’s installation at the Wharfside Arts Hub (see poster visual for dates) is a fascinating collection of drawings, photographs, sculptures, films and sounds.

But back to the elephant in the room. Why exactly is his exhibition called Don’t Think of the Elephant?

The phrase references a book by cognitive scientist George Lakoff. He said if you tell someone not to think of an elephant, they have to picture an elephant in their mind. It's impossible to avoid.

Says Benedict, ‘This is a show about looking. About what we look at and what we don’t look at. It is also a show about how we look, and how the way we look changes the things that we see.

‘Lakoff’s elephant is an example of the limits of these systems of looking: a very simple command is made impossible by the way our minds work. Attention is similar. We tend to think that we pay attention to things because they are important, but we can only judge what is important through the things we have already paid attention to.

‘As a neurodivergent person with ADHD, these concerns are also deeply personal to me.’

The exhibition takes a playful and magpie approach to genres, using all kinds of media to explore the theme.

Do go and see this free exhibition at the Wharfside. It’s a thought-provoking experience, and Benedict is a very welcoming host.

And DO try to not think of an elephant.

Impossible!

The planters on Market Jew Street may have had mixed reviews from some, but what is beyond any doubt (to us amateur gardeners, anyway) is that the planting itself is beautiful.

Verbena bonariensis (pictured) is an absolute star of the show and a total butterfly magnet.

On that note, has anyone noticed just how many butterflies have been fluttering around Penzance this summer?

What’s that you say? Where can you buy a glass octopus in Penzance ? 🐙

It’s funny you should ask, because we just spotted this gorgeous chap in Mermaid Too, opposite the Harbour Car Park at the Wharfside.

We popped in planning to write a post about the wide range of attractive gifts for sale.

But got so totally mesmerised by the ornamental glass in store, we focused completely on that.

❤️ Hearts
🦀 Crabs
🕊️ Birds
🐄 Cows
🔮 A pretty and mystical-looking sphere we have decided to call the Orb of Destiny

It really is a treasure trove for glass lovers and a great spot for buying unique glass gifts.

Quiz. You can only fill up your pick ‘n’ mix jar with one of the items on display in this post, available at Freddie’s Proper Sweets. Which will it be?

🤔 Chocolate-covered peanuts?
🤔 Cola bottles?
🤔 Jelly beans?
🤔 Candy necklaces?

Answer in the comments, preferably with some passionate justification for your selection.

Thankfully, of course, we do not live in a cruel dystopian world where pick ‘n’ mix jars can only be filled up with one kind of item.

At Freddie’s, you can go to town with myriad textures, flavours and colours.

So go and fill a jar at Freddie’s. Have one of everything. Pack half a jar with foam bananas and take it from there.

There are no rules – only sweet possibilities…

What would Carole from Cork & Fork recommend from her own menu?

‘People should definitely try the crab linguine,’ she says, ‘and the trio of fish is always popular – three different fishes from the surrounding area.’

And for wine?

‘Bacchus from Polgoon, just up the road from us. The grape variety is known for its minerality. We also do their rosés, which are very nice, and their juices.’

Now we were this far in, there was no way back – we had to ask Carole about dessert.

‘That would be the ice cream, or the affogato (ice cream with espresso), topped with honeycomb from our own beehives.’

At this point, we lapsed into a silent, dreamy reverie – a kind of dessert-based Fantasia of fractal honeycomb and swirling ice cream.

Luckily, Carole picked up the conversation again.

‘We're currently expanding our hours and will run our food menu all day.

‘And we've got this beautiful new view.’ (The restaurant had showstopping new windows installed a few months back.)

And there’s more. The business has recently hired new staff, including manager Holly (far left in the pic featuring three people).

Soooo much going on at Cork & Fork.

Carole finished with an exciting bit of nuptials-related news.

‘We are hoping to host more weddings, due to the lovely view and feedback from other wedding events.’

We said our goodbyes, thanking Carole for her time and mooching up Market Jew Street, still dreaming about that honeycomb-topped affogato.

It will do that to you, Cork & Fork.

The menu, the food, and the restaurant itself, is looking amazing right now.

Now here’s something that’s got school run written all over it.

This is the Roxform Porto L, a Longtail Cargo E-Bike which will get the kids to school, handle a medium weekly shop and see you gliding the streets of Penzance with effortless cool.

Morgan from RideOn kindly went through the specs, while a chant went through our mind, quiet at first but rising and rising to a crescendo.

want one

Want One

WANT ONE!!!!!

Said Morgan, ‘It's got a powerful Bafang 65 newton-metre motor, dual batteries, does 50 miles-plus on the batteries and the great thing about it is the price – £2,290 on the road. Leave the car on the drive, get the kids to school.’

Some other things Morgan told us:

⚡️ You can get two kids on it. (There’s a foam seat, not shown in our pics.)
⚡️ You can slap a big old box on it if you want to use it as a carrier for tools or a weekly shop.
⚡️ It does 15.5 mph with pedal assist, has full hydraulic brakes front and back with rotors, and front suspension.

We waited until Morgan had finished.

‘Want one,’ we murmured out loud.

He nodded. ‘I get that a lot.’

It’s a beautiful bike. Go talk to the RideOn boys for more details…

We created a little film about the living legends known as Penzance Community Flora Group.

If you’ve admired the shocking red cannas, violet verbena and extraordinary echiums around town, there’s a good chance you have these volunteers to thank for them.

Yes, volunteers. These horticultural heroes look after beds at the station car park, the information centre, Sullivans, all of Wharf Road, Abbey Basin, the top of Morrab Road, St John’s Hall and more spots because…

… Because what is a town without the beauty of plants and flowers?

(Answer: an impoverished hellscape, but let’s not go there.)

Thanks to Jane – Group Overlord, Petal Potentate and Director of Dirt, according to one of her colleagues – for chatting to us.

A shoutout also to:

🌲 Hedge Trimmer Clender Huntley, Volunteer Coordinator
📋 Carol White, Organiser Extraordinaire
📷 Ann the Fan, Chief Photographer
🔨 Roger the Tool Wielder
🚚 Neil from Cormac, who empties all the green waste produced

As we say in the video, they NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS. We can vouch that they are lovely people, so what’s stopping you?

Search their socials and get in touch to find out how you can get involved.
