A good way to store apples is to turn it into APPLE JUICE juice. Especially good if you have a glut of apples. Most varieties express lots of juice, cookers and dessert apples.

Despite the hot summer some of the varieties in our little orchard have fruited well. A pickup load of apples has made over 200 70cl bottles. At ÂŁ4-5 a bottle in the shops it can be worth the processing cost - juicing, bottling and pasteurising if you have somewhere local.

This Saturday 19 September we will be at the Worcestershire Biodiversity & Regenerative Food Festival. Being held in Worcester we have been placed on the Cathedral Plaza just in front of the impressive Cathedral. If in town do come an say hello and support the other stalls holders for what I understand is the first event of its kind.

A somewhat belated post but it was great to have so many visitors to our stand at the BANK HOLIDAY PLUM FAYRE in Pershore. Good to see & hear from previous customers and talk to potential new one's. It was good to talk about plum trees at least because there were very few stalls offering the fruit. The main plum season past earlier in August. A smaller quantity of varieties do ripen up later.

Plum season has been in full swing through August. Here in the Vale of Evesham plum growing is celebrated with a month of activities known as the PERSHORE PLUM FESTIVAL https://www.pershoreplumfestival.org.uk. It culminates with the PLUM FAYRE DAY on Bank Holiday Monday. We will be at the event on Church Walk close to the Abbey. Come and say hello if you are visiting! On Saturday the Vale Landscape Heritage Trust https://valetrust.weebly.com/were selling plums from their orchards in Pershore. The Trust has saved many orchards from being bulldozed in the Vale. They provide much fruit aswell such a valuable wildlife habitat.

It may not be 'Plastic Free July' now but wherever possible we are trying to move away from oil based products to natural degradable ones.

Until now we have used synthetic tying string. We are now moving to using biodegradable jute string. Over time we have moved away from using oil based products in our packaging as much as possible. However it is difficult to see an alternative to a plastic to pop the roots into!

We are now well underway BUDDING all the fruit trees. This is always done in late summer leaving enough time in the growing season for the attached buds to callous.
It has been such a dry summer here, so my main concern is that there is enough activity in the rootstocks for good callousing to take place. We must not dwell on this too much and trust in nature. We get most of our budding material from.our mother trees, pictured, the dark green of the fruit trees contrasts with the dried out grass beneath.

We have now made the fruit trees we have been growing this summer AVAILABLE ON THE WEBSITE AND AVAILABLE TO ADVANCE ORDER. It seems a long way off when it's still very hot and so dry but time will pass. Despite the hot weather the trees have grown quite well helped by a cooler and wetter spring in May. A lot better crop of plums but we will be light on pears.

Recently seen in a garden close to the nursery was a HUMMINGBIRD HAWK MOTH. I'd never seen this unusual day time flying moth before, so hopefully there are more about.

Apparently they migrate from southern Europe and like to feed on tubular flowers for nectar using their long curved proboscis. Seemingly not unusual with the warmer weather nowadays but still a good spot I feel!

With our changing climate we may see more of this and other insects in our orchards and gardens.

As we are well into June fruit trees will be shedding any small, poorly pollinated fruitlets. Any fruit that remains on should remain until maturity.

So using scissors or secateurs you can THIN any crowded fruit clusters to give room for the fruit to swell. Thin to 2 or at the most three apples per cluster. Larger cooking apples require more space to swell into.

In a good years plums can become overloaded with fruit. Thinning will lighten the load, allow fruit to swell, improve air circulation and reduce fungal infection.

No need to thin cherries! If you need to thin pears then you are very fortunate!

When it comes to young fruit trees let them fruit gradually. In the first year after planting the general rule is to remove fruitlets. In the second year allow some to ripen on the trees, as in the lower right photo

If you are developing your apple or pear trees into ESPALIERS and have reduced their height to the level at which you wish the first or following tiers to be, now or soon is the time to be bending the shoots down.

A few shoots should be starting to grow. They should be supple enough at this stage to bend down - one to the left and one to the right to start the first or subsequent tiers.

Keep the uppermost shoot growing upright, it will be the strongest shoot. It will be used to raise the espalier to the next tier. Ideally tie in the trained shoots - the upright shoot and new horizontal shoots to canes. The latter can then be tied into your longer horizontal wires.

The photos show containerised trees. We are growing some trees as single tier espaliers in peat free compost. They will be available from late August for collection when they have fully grown and rooted well. We will make them visible on the website nearer the time.
