Another great event last night with Brooklands Members. This time with David Rooney and his book ‘The Big Hop’. A compelling story of the pioneers of aviation, remarkable engineering innovations and epic bravery that led to the first non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in 1919. A very entertaining and illuminating talk was followed by a lengthy book signing. Signed copies available in the bookshop.

We finally kicked off our Book Group for 2026 with Seascraper, longlisted for last year’s Booker, by Benjamin Wood. Short at 176 pages, the author has
written a deeply atmospheric novel centred around the distant and dangerous tideline, a wonderful horse and two very different men. Both prisoners of their past, both trying to break free from it and both in thrall to their mothers. The sun breaks through the fog at the end and the general consensus was that it was a tight, pleasing novel that would reward a second reading.

Today’s Friday Favourite comes from Helen. She says;

“As a fan of Miss Benson’s Beetle, I couldn’t wait to read this latest novel from author Rachel Joyce. In it, Joyce beautifully captures the subtle nuances of family relationships in the face of tragedy. The book follows the Kemp family after the tragic death of their artist father, Vic Kemp, and explores the relationship dynamic of his four children. There’s added tension as his death swiftly follows an impulsive marriage to young artist, Bella-Mae. Joyce captures the differing personalities as they navigate their way through grief and how this affects the relationship bonds between them. Set on an island in the Italian Lakes during a European heat wave, the uncomfortable temperatures add to the mounting, awkward tension, but can the family survive this devastating loss, or will it fracture them forever? A compulsive page turner to the end.”

All of our Friday Favourites are available to purchase in store.
