Curious about gemstone durability?

The Mohs scale measures mineral hardness from 1-10, with diamonds at the top. Introduced in 1812, the scale helps us understand scratch resistance and stone breakage, which is a key factor in jewellery design.

&OR founder Rebecca explains, ‘Emeralds are beautiful, but with a hardness of 7.5-8 and often with natural inclusions, they’re less durable for daily wear. For a green gemstone which lasts, I recommend green sapphire. They rate a solid 9 on the Mohs scale and come in many stunning shades of green, from teal to deep forest green.’
