Rare Thebes corner chair by Liberty & Co circa 1885. Thebes style furniture was first introduced to Liberty in the mid 1880’s. Other designers such as Christopher Dresser, E W Godwin and artists such as Ford Maddox Brown also did similar designs circa 1870’s. I love the sculptural quality of this piece it has a sympathetic harmony to similar ancient designs found in Thebes and now held at the British Museum, but with a slight modern twist for the time. Recovered in a Victorian woven silk fabric from a similar vintage.

The most surprising church appeared like the angels on a recent delivery to Norfolk. Very pleasing! St Michael the Archangel Church, Booton. Norfolk. Designed by eccentric clergyman Reverend Whitwell Elwin - a descendant of Pocahontas no less! A friend of Charles Darwin to boot. The angels carved by James Minns and windows by Cox Sons and Buckley 1881.

An inspirational day in Southwark London yesterday. Tracey Emin at Tate Modern very busy but worth it very moving. I know it’s obvious for me but I had to post the chair. “There’s a lot of money in chairs” 1994.
Borough Market for lunch great Thai! Then to Southwark Cathedral!
Thanks to my beautiful daughter for a lovely day. Although we left London when she was just a small kid London runs through her veins still, good to see.
The chest at Southwark Cathedral was wonderful to see made by German immigrant craftsman in about 1585 and the window by Henry Holiday is a mater piece designed and made in his studio in 1903. A tour de force in glass and a great tribute to the late Victorian Pre-Raphaelites. One of the few windows to survive the bombing in the world war 2. Thank God!
