There’s a new coffee table update on the website, and it’s all change with two new projects. Although I’ve left the green yarn from the finished Bao Bao Shawl on the table as it looks soooo good with the cool pink of the new sock, the neon pink of the neverending scarf and the grey stripes of my new summer tee. 😍

The Bao Bao Shawl is in the shop.

And it’s everything I hoped it would be:
* Soft and drapey but with a woolly feel.
* Quirky stripes.
* Bold but wearable colours
* An interesting knit but nothing too taxing
* Large enough to feel like an achievement but not too large that it never gets finished.😆

Bao Bao is a large triangle shawl designed by Isabell Kraemer the pattern is available to buy on Ravelry or as a digital pattern in the Pittenweem shop.

I used John Arbon Yarnadelic Sport to knit our shop version. It’s 100% Falklands Corriedale wool. It’s a woolly wool but still soft. I used one skein each of Ordinary Joe (stoney beige), Blue Monday (denim blue) and Toxic (neon green).

Bao Bao is knitted from the top down. You start at the top back and then increase down. You do end up with a lot of stitches. It took about 40 minutes to cast off!

The stitch pattern is called a dip stitch where you knit into the stitch that’s three rows below the stitch on the needle. This creates an extra stitch which you then decrease on the following row. It’s very straightforward to work. Just don’t drop the stitch off your needle. This is not fisherman’s rib.

The pattern on the back side really adds some interest too.

I’ve written all about it on the blog, just visit our website.

I’ve also included info and photos of how I blocked it... you need a bit of space and time.

We have a rather lovely new yarn in the shop.

Viva DK is 100% superwash, merino meaning it’s soft, smooth and plump.

We’ve got 9 variegated shades (one is more semi solid the other 8 are definitely variegated) and they are beautiful. Some are a bit moody, others light and there’s a few bright ones too.

As usual I’ve whipped up a quick hat so you have something to squish. I used our free Simple DK Hat pattern. It’s knitted in the round so you don’t need to sew it up at the end and there’s no irritating seams.

A hat is a great project for beginners to in the round knitting.

You can practice your Magic Loop Technique (knitting a small circumference on a long circular needle).

Or you can start with a 40cm circular needle and switch to Double Pointed Needles (DPN) when you reach the decreasing.

Or you can knit the whole hat on DPNs.

Come see all the colours and squish the hat. Our Pittenweem shop is open Wednesdays to Saturdays 11am to 4pm or browse and buy online.

I think I’m nearing the WiP sweet spot.

Just enough projects that I have options but I’m not paralysed by choice. A small project that feels achievable, a large project that’s a satisfying marathon. Some different fibres and weights of yarn And lots of colour.

They also all fit on my coffee table… in fact I could probably add another one. 😂

I have reached the green stripes on my Bao Bao shawl. 🎉

It’s a shawl design from Isabell Kraemer (available to buy on Ravelry and as a digital pattern in the shop) and I’ve been stalking it for a while. Once the new shades of John Arbon Yarnadelic Sport arrived I cast on asap.

Bao Bao is a large triangle shawl with a three colour stripe pattern. The stitch pattern is called a dip stitch and it’s very straightforward to work. You simple knit into the stitch 3 rows below the one on the needle. This creates a long V-stitch. Spaced across the row it looks like little boats.

I love a stripe on its own but those little ‘boats’ really have a wow factor.

I’m using Yarnadelic Sport in Ordinary Joe, Blue Monday and Toxic (neon green!).

Look at that green.🤩

I’m excited to see these stripes worn, all bundled and wrapped.

And it feels amazing.

To finish, I just have about 5 more stripes to do than a whole load of ribbing.

The ribbing may be my downfall. 😂

The Pittenweem shop is open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 11am to 4pm.

You can conveniently browse and buy online too and either pick up from the shop or we can post it to you. There’s free postage on orders over £65.

A little WiP. This is a Brèid by Kate Davies. It’s going to be a small triangle shawl/cowl/headscarf.

I have a bit of a tiny shawl obsession and when I saw this stranded colourwork pattern I fell in love. Although let’s be honest it doesn’t take much. 😂

I’m knitting it in Wee County Yarns Kinross 4ply which is STUNNING. So so so soft once knitted and washed.

Now… this doesn’t look like a triangle yet as I’m knitting in the round (better for colourwork) and then cutting it open. 😬 I’ll keep you updated on the website and our weekly newsletter.

Brèid is part of Kate’s new book Knitting Wester Ross. We’ve got copies in the shop and online along with lots of her other books. And you can also buy it as a single digital pattern on Ravelry or in the shop.

Come browse our bookshelves, see our Kinross 4ply range and share your steeking triumphs… the Pittenweem shop is open Wednesdays to Saturdays 11am to 4pm. Or browse and buy online.
