Long before today's roads, railways and suburbs, London was a very different place.

Our collection of original antique maps of London lets you explore the capital through the eyes of historic mapmakers — from maps depicting London before the Great Fire of 1666, through Georgian and Victorian expansion, to historic maps of the River Thames and London Docks.

Description: The Spanish Armada engaged by the British in Plymouth Sound with Sir Francis Drake in HMS Revenge. From The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords Representing the Engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets, in the year 1588. Engraved by John Pine, Drawn by C. Lempriere and H. Gravelot. London.

'Plate III. and Chart III. At the left Hand Corner is represented the first Engagement between the Spanish and English Fleets: After which the English give Chace to the Spaniards, who draw themselves up into a Roundel. Plate IV. and Chart IV. De Valdez’s Galleon springs her Foremast, and is taken by Sir Francis Drake. The Lord-Admiral with the Bear and Mary Rose, pursue the Enemy, who are in the Form of a Half Moon.'

A large selection dating from the early 17th century to the Mid 19th century. The 1637 map by William Hole after Christopher Saxton is very decorative and has a compass rose and an elaborate title cartouche with an amorial. Joseph Ellis's 18th century map has a vignette style title cartouche and a small compass rose. It is quite scarce. Other eamples include the early 18th century Robert Morden map and the decorative Thomas Moule map with heraldry and vignettes.

We have a large selection of maps from the 17th to 19th century including one of the largest 19th century maps of the German Empire by Pierre Tardieu. On three sheets, hand coloured, dated circa 1810 and measuring 950 x 1240mm, very scarce. The mid-17th century, retrospective map by Philipp Clüver depicts Germany during the reigns of two Roman Emporers. Use the link above to view our full selection.
