Here’s one of the reasons why I love what I do….

In amongst a colossal collection of Military & Historical signatures, I’ve unearthed this little lot, which includes a plethora of 18/19th century Times Newspapers’ the most prominent ones are of The Battle of the Nile, Trafalgar & Waterloo!

A small collection of glass photographic plates of the RN, Dartmouth d.1904 taken by Admiral Colin Cantlie when he was a mere Midshipman.

A volume of letters, RN documents and ephemera related to Master & Commander Charles Gage-Brown of HMS Warspite d.1828

And finally a Booklet of Specimens from Melville Island, Northern Territory, Australia by Sir John Richardson (1787-1865), who was a Scottish Naturalist, Naval Surgeon, Arctic explorer and cartographer.

This stunning 1930-40’s Ex-Department Store “Art Deco”Champagne Wall Mirror Clock is about to emerge from the M&K workshop!

The frame has been sanded, cleaned and polished, the original electric clock motor has been stripped and is now on test, soon to be fitted, all we need now is a wall for it to be mounted on, and it’ll need to be a large wall as it stands 5ft 2” high x 44”wide!

Or you could just lean it against a wall as a stand alone piece…the choice is endless.

Watch this space, tick tock!

1st up this evening…..

Fantastic Repurposed Royal Navy Rum Cask or Barrel Drinks Cabinet c.1890

This wonderful coopered solid oak RN rum cask is in fine fettle with a wonderful exterior patina commensurate with its age. It’s been repurposed sometime ago into an individual rum serving table or drinks cabinet. A hinged door has been created and fitted with a lock, the interior has an upper shelf for copper rum cups and the lower section fitted with a cut out holder for multiple bottles of the amber nectar……RUM!
It stands 26”H x 17” x 13” and personally, I’d use this as a side table which keeps your rum close at hand!

Now this next piece of ephemera is amazing….

Freshly Framed Royal Flying Corps Signed Card by Capt J.T.B McCudden V.C d.1917

Captain James Thomas Byford McCudden, VC, DSO & Bar, MC & Bar, MM (1895 – 1918), was an English flying ace of the First World War and among the most highly decorated airmen in British military history.
Born in 1895 to a middle class family with military traditions, McCudden joined the Royal Engineers in 1910. Having an interest in mechanics he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) in 1913 at which time he first came into regular contact with aircraft. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he flew as an observer before training as a fighter pilot in 1916.

McCudden claimed his first victory in September 1916 flying the Airco DH.2 and claimed his fifth victory, making him an ace, on 15 February 1917.
During the summer of 1917 flying the S.E.5a, he dispatched a further 31 enemy aircraft while claiming multiple victories in one day on 11 occasions. With his six British medals and one French, McCudden received more awards for gallantry than any other airman of British nationality serving in the First World War, he was also one of the longest serving.

At the time of his death, he had achieved 57 aerial victories, placing him seventh on the list of the war's most successful aces, sadly on 9 July 1918, McCudden was killed in a flying accident when his aircraft crashed on takeoff due to engine failure.

This framed & mounted signed ephemera is in good preserved condition and includes a photo of the RFC Ace along with an gilt RFC embossed envelope, the signed accompanying letter in black ink is signed by the pilot with a short message which reads, “Who had thought in 1910 such honours & glory would be mine”, “Jim Capt R.F.C” and is dated 1917.

NB. This signature has come from a military family’s extensive collection of military signatures collected over 200 years, we have been given the task of sorting through them, many getting appraised by experts, some going to auction, with others being cherry picked to be framed, like this one.

Absolutely fantastic RN display at “The Box” in Plymouth, as well as other art installations and historic displays. Well worth a visit, it’s FREE and they only ask for donations, definitely worth dipping your hands in your pocket for.

Formulating a plan for the HMS Plymouth bell, which includes a large woolie pulley to stick it up! 😆😆
