Residents and visitors to are reminded about the upcoming traffic management needed at Berw Road (August 17-21) as part of the demolition phase of the Pontypridd Police Station and Berw Road Car Park buildings.

The arrangements from tomorrow will likely bring traffic disruption at Berw Road and surrounding roads. Motorists are advised to avoid using this route if possible. The work is scheduled during the school holiday to minimise disruption as much as possible.

It includes temporary traffic lights on the Berw Road-Bridge Street junction, with a lane closure near the pharmacy and medical centre on Berw Road (10am on Monday, August 17, until the end of the day on Friday, August 21).

No road closure is needed, but a lane closure will be in place as shown in purple on the map: https://orlo.uk/qs27X

The traffic lights will be manually controlled at peak hours to ensure efficiency. Buses and large vehicles will be able to use all routes.

Please note, the work is being coordinated with the scheme to carry out localised repairs to Berw Road Bridge (White Bridge), that took place from August 10-14. The bridge works have been completed before the first Berw Road traffic management starts on August 17. White Bridge will always be open when there is traffic management in place affecting Berw Road.

This is the first of two anticipated periods of traffic management affecting Berw Road – the second is currently being arranged and will be announced in due course.

Please note, there will be a full road closure through Town Centre, scheduled on Sunday evening to minimise disruption.

The closure is needed to install two food/drink kiosks at the ‘riverside plaza’ public space (the former M&S site). They have been constructed away from the site, and will need to be delivered on Sunday and lifted into place using a crane.

The work will take place from 5pm-10pm on Sunday, June 28, requiring a road closure at Taff Street (from Crossbrook Street to High Street) and other local roads – including Penuel Lane, Gas Road, Temperance Place, Market Street, Church Street and Mill Street. An alternative route for motorists will be via Crossbrook Street, Gelliwastad Road, Catherine Street, Sardis Road Gyratory and Sardis Road – as shown on this map: https://orlo.uk/2YoLw

With the roads closing at 5pm, motorists who have already accessed the closure area will need to exit via High Street before 6pm due to the installation of the crane. Staff from the Council’s contractor will be present in the area to operate the road closure and ensure the above arrangements.

During the closure period, access will be maintained for emergency services and pedestrians – but access to premises will only be available via foot.

In the days ahead of Sunday’s road closure, residents, businesses and visitors to Pontypridd Town Centre may notice some preparatory works taking place, to remove several bollards adjacent to the site. These preparatory works are expected to cause minimal disruption, with all roads and pedestrian accesses remaining open.

The two food/drink kiosks will not be brought into use immediately after Sunday’s delivery. They will need to be connected to utility services and fully fitted-out, while the Council is working to progress the marketing process for prospective tenants to operate from the kiosks.

Staying cool when we get a heatwave doesn't have to be a struggle. Here is a quick, guide to keeping your indoor space chilled and comfortable:

🏠 Master Your Windows & Blinds
Block the sun: Shut your curtains and blinds on any windows getting direct sunlight (especially south- or west-facing ones) to stop your room from turning into a greenhouse.

Ventilate smartly: Keep windows closed during the blazing midday heat if it's hotter outside than inside. Crack them wide open in the evening and overnight once the outside air cools down.

💨 Level Up Your Airflow
The ice trick: Put a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle right in front of your fan to blast a much cooler breeze around the room.

Check the spin: If you have a ceiling fan, make sure it’s spinning counter-clockwise so it pushes the cool air straight down.

Open indoor doors: Keep internal doors open to let air flow freely through the house, unless you are trying to keep one specific room trapped in the cold.

🔌 Cut Down the Heat Sources
Ditch the big oven: Avoid using the oven or tumble dryer during the hottest afternoon hours.

Cook smart: Stick to fresh salads, or use the microwave and air fryer so you don't accidentally turn the kitchen into a sauna.

Power down: Turn off any electronics, game consoles, or appliances you aren't actively using.

🧍 Take Care of Yourself
Chill out: Wear lightweight, breathable clothes and keep a cold drink nearby to stay hydrated all day.

The town council has confirmed that they will not be able to replace the star this Christmas due to the damage caused

We are aware that the Pontypridd Town Centre Christmas Tree has been vandalised overnight. Town Council staff have evaluated the damage and unfortunately it will not be possible to return the star to the top of the tree this Christmas. If anyone has any further information regarding the incident, please contact the Police. We are very sorry this mindless act has distressed so many people and our thanks go out to all those who have reported it.
