Meiji Era Japanese Carved Desk Circa 1890 - Explainer Video With Narration

This magnificent desk dates from Japan's Meiji period, a golden age of Japanese craftsmanship when master artisans created extraordinary pieces for export to Europe and America. The main feature is the incredible carving including the amazing dragon motifs. Unlike Western dragons, which are often portrayed as fearsome creatures, Japanese dragons are symbols of wisdom, strength, good fortune and protection. They are closely associated with water, rainfall and the forces of nature and hence were believed to bring prosperity and success.

Big In Japan Special - Mieji Period Japanese Dragon Desk

* newsletter *

We're headed to Japan! Starting with this hand carved Meiji period Japanese desk. Hopefully the photos illustrate the quality to the carving with all the intricate details. Of course the main focus are the dragons on the back panel and doors. In the Japanese tradition dragons symbolise strength, protection and good fortune so we are definitely in safe hands here. A quality Japanese antique work of art - alongside others below. Have a great weekend :)

A regulator clock is a highly accurate timepiece originally designed to serve as the “master clock” in homes, offices, schools and railway stations, regulating and checking the accuracy of other clocks and watches. Most antique regulator clocks, particularly the elegant Vienna regulators of the late 19th century, feature a long pendulum and precision movement housed within a glazed wooden case, often crafted in walnut or mahogany.

Their emphasis was on precision rather than ornament alone, with fine mechanical engineering allowing for exceptionally consistent timekeeping. Today, antique regulator clocks are prized not only for their horological importance, but also for their striking architectural presence and rhythmic pendulum movement, making them a superb addition to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
