Two Liquidambars, with a subtle difference between them 🍂

Liquidambar styraciflua is known for its brilliant autumn colour, while ‘Worplesdon’ has a more upright, narrower shape, making it a great option where you want the same autumn display but don’t have quite as much room.

Both bring those amazing shades of red, orange and purple in autumn, but the shape of the tree can make all the difference when choosing the right one for your projects.

Two Acer favourites, but with quite different strengths 🍁

Acer ‘Autumn Blaze’ is the one to go for if you want fast growth and that really impressive orange-red autumn colour, while Acer campestre, our native Field Maple, is a bit more understated but incredibly tough and adaptable.

Both make great landscape trees, but depending on the site and what you’re looking for, one might be a better fit than the other.

Some plants really earn their place in summer planting 🌸☀️

Hydrangea ‘Limelight’ is tough, reliable and flowers for months. Koelreuteria brings unusual seed pods after flowering, and Vitex adds a softer late-summer look that pollinators love. Easy plants that keep the garden looking good right through the warmest months.

If you want a tree that keeps changing through the seasons, these are hard to beat 🍒🍂

Sorbus ‘Dodong’ is covered in berries and then turns brilliant shades in autumn. Malus ‘Evereste’ gives masses of ornamental crab apples, while Cornus mas adds bright fruits and lovely seasonal interest. A great mix for colour now and later in the year.

Taxodium can happily grow in very wet ground, but once established it’s surprisingly drought tolerant too. Ginkgo is another favourite — its strong cell structure and incredible history as a species that has survived for millions of years makes it a real future-proof planting choice. 🌳
