Some cakes are almost too beautiful to cut into… almost.

This week’s bake is an apricot and pistachio frangipane, finished with a glossy apricot glaze and scattered with pistachios and delicate dried cornflower petals.

Even better, it’s gluten free, so even more people can enjoy a slice alongside their favourite coffee.

Freshly baked and waiting for you at The Workhouse Gallery & Café in Presteigne. We can’t promise it will be here for long.

Pastel de nata are one of those little treats that are hard to resist.

These famous Portuguese custard tarts are freshly baked, with crisp, buttery pastry and a creamy custard centre. Perfect alongside a coffee.

You will also spot our team brushing up on their coffee skills with refresher training from James Gourmet Coffee. We are always learning and looking for ways to make your next cup even better.

If you are in Presteigne, or exploring the Herefordshire and Powys borders, we would love to welcome you in. We are open today, Tuesday until Saturday, 10am-4pm.

📚 THE WORKHOUSE BOOK CLUB 📚

We are looking for three curious readers.

A good book can take you somewhere unexpected, into another life, another time, another place, or perhaps even a little closer to understanding your own.

We would like to invite three individuals to become the very first members of The Workhouse Book Club.

We have chosen six carefully curated books for you to choose from, each with its own story to discover: from a child caught in the Spanish Civil War and a life-changing journey through Ghana, to a Gothic mystery inspired by Mary Shelley, a powerful story of Wales, poetry and recovery, a walk around the edge of Cymru, and the ghosts, fairies, songs and traditions of Herefordshire.

The six books are:

📖 Albi by Hilary Shepherd
📖 In a Foreign Country by Hilary Shepherd
📖 The Forger’s Ink by Jo Mazelis
📖 The Crazy Truth by Gemma June Howell
📖 The Edge of Cymru: A Journey by Julie Brominicks
📖 The Folk-Lore of Herefordshire by Ella Mary Leather

If you are UK-based and would like to be one of our first three readers to win a book, simply:

- Make sure you FOLLOW
- LIKE this post
- and comment BOOK below

We will then send you a message asking which of the six books you would choose, and, more importantly, why.

Three winners will be selected at random from all valid entries, and we will do our best to match each winner with their preferred book.

All we ask in return is that you read your book and, within 8 weeks, create a short, creative review that we can share across The Workhouse Gallery & Café’s social media channels. Your review could be a Reel, a short video, a voiceover, stop-motion or something completely your own. You don’t have to show your face, but you can if you’d like to.

The prize draw closes at 11:59pm BST on Monday 24 August 2026, and the three winners will be contacted by DM on Tuesday 25 August 2026.

Which book has caught your eye?

Comment BOOK below to enter.

Open to UK residents only. Full prize draw terms and conditions are available on request — simply send us a DM.

I ordered a flat white ☕️

And this is what happened.

From the first grind to the final pour, here’s Anna doing what she does best: making an excellent coffee look rather effortless. Although, as anyone who knows their way around a coffee machine will tell you, there’s a little more to it than that.

Keep watching to see the coffee art ✨

Our beans come from James Gourmet Coffee, a family-run company in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. So when you order a coffee at The Workhouse Gallery & Café in Presteigne, you are also supporting a local supplier.

A reminder that we are open today, Tuesday, and every Tuesday to Saturday, 10am–4pm.

Light lunches are served from 12–3pm.

If you’re nearby, pop in and see us. There’s coffee, lunch, plenty to look at and, hopefully, you’ll find a reason to take a little time to slow down too.

Upstairs, our rug gallery is home to beautiful rugs, kilims and woven treasures, each with its own character and story, just waiting to find its place in your home.

Downstairs, the gallery, café and emporium come together under one roof. A carefully considered mix of art, interiors, vintage and pre-loved clothing, gifts and homeware.

When the weather warms up, nothing feels quite like linen.

At The Workhouse Gallery & Café in Presteigne, we’ve welcomed just two beautifully crafted linen tunic and trouser sets in timeless blueberry blue and vibrant raspberry pink.

Alongside our wider selection of linen and cotton kaftans, dresses, tops and pyjamas, these are pieces chosen not because they’re fashionable for a single season, but because they’re made to be worn, enjoyed and returned to for many summers to come.

The tunics and cropped trousers can be worn together or styled separately, taking you effortlessly from relaxed daytime wandering to summer lunches, holidays and evenings out. Pair them with our carefully curated jewellery, shoes and accessories to create a look that’s entirely your own.

There is a quiet confidence in natural linen. Breathable, beautifully draped and wonderfully comfortable, it’s the fabric many of us reach for during the current UK heatwave, offering comfort without compromising on style.

Our emporium is built around thoughtful choices rather than fast fashion. Alongside our linen pieces you will find an ever-changing selection of carefully chosen vintage and preloved clothing, artisan textiles, homewares and gifts, objects and garments selected for their quality, character and longevity.

As a family-run independent business, we love helping people discover pieces they will treasure rather than simply replace.

If you are visiting Presteigne or exploring the Welsh Borders this summer, we would be delighted to welcome you. Take your time, browse at your own pace and perhaps discover something you’ll enjoy wearing for years to come.
