❌ Evidence (widely available) shows that aerosol deodorants/antiperspirants can be particularly harmful because of the fine airborne particles that can be breathed in during use
❌ Small print on the cans (and in the safety sheets) suggest that users open a window when using aerosols to avoid breathing in the particles…
❌ Overuse/misuse of aerosols can lead to inhalation of chemicals. Negative effects are clearly visible in their material safety sheets.

It’s maternal mental health week…

So what better a time to reintroduce myself…I’m Melissa (aka Melissa from The Refill Barn).

One of the most wonderful things for me since starting The Refill Barn, has been the amazing friendships we’ve made within our community. We have been through highs and lows with many of you, and we are honoured to have shared so many laughs and some tears. You are all amazing and we are so grateful for you coming into our lives.

Looking (a long way) back at the root of what moved me to starting the shop was a break down after my first pregnancy. I vividly remember going to see a therapist who told me that I’d somehow harnessed a postnatal depression to very real fears about the environment and climate crisis. Eventually I was able to move forward by making changes in my life in a way that made me feel I was in some way making a difference in the world.

I count myself extremely lucky to have come through it and have really ever since used my anxiety to force a change in my life which turned out to be incredibly positive.

To all the mums out there struggling - you are not alone, talk to friends, families, medical professionals but please don’t suffer in silence 💙

Quick reminder…

We have a lot of builder movement going on tomorrow during the day so we took the decision from a Health & Safety 👷‍♀️👷 point of view that it is safer not to have people coming on site for the day and close for the day.

We will be back open as usual on Saturday morning 8.30am - 12noon.

Homage to Honest Toil’s EVOO

In a market where so much olive oil has been blended and stripped of quality, we’re delighted to offer the incredible extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) from Honest Toil. If you’ve tried it you’ll know — it’s not your average olive oil.

Honest Toil is:
- Hands-on
- Community-first
- Small-scale

They use olives from both their own groves and other small family growers within their local community. They had the opportunity to expand but instead of buying more land and producing more oil themselves, they chose to support neighbouring farmers growing the same variety of Koroneiki olives.

Olives are harvested using traditional low-impact methods that respect the birds and wildlife living in and around the groves.

They are then pressed collectively alongside the local growers harvests. As demand has grown, Honest Toil has built relationships with three local family-run presses to help produce the quantity needed while still keeping everything small-scale and community-led.

What are polyphenols?

Polyphenols are powerful plant-based antioxidants found in high-quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Countless studies now suggest that regularly consuming good EVOO may help:
- reduce inflammation
- support heart and gut health
- regulate blood sugar
- reduce the risk of neurodegenerative disease

We stock both 500ml Honest Toil bottles and EVOO on tap for refill.

We source through SESI, who receive the olive oil in 1000L crates before decanting into reusable 20L tubs for refill shops. Once emptied, the tubs are returned to SESI to be washed and reused again and again as part of a closed-loop system designed to reduce packaging waste.

I’ve had a busy Saturday afternoon removing labels, scrubbing, washing, sterilising .global , and bottles 😅 🫧🧽

Thank you for saving us your drinks bottles from the recycling bin 🙏

We don’t accept many jar/bottle donations but we love being able to collaborate with local independent businesses and being able to help reduce waste…these bottles work perfectly as refill bottles for our customers giving them a new lease of life.

MAY REFILL CALENDAR

Please see above our opening hours for May, we’re having to shut on Friday 8th May for the day for some large building materials to be delivered and put into place and decided it’s safer not having people onsite that day.

We will be open over May half term as usual so no need to panic 😅.

Anyone who’s popped in lately will notice we’ve had A LOT going on both in the shop and also on site.

We‘re delighted with the new layout in the shop, it feels much less chaotic and there seems to be more space 😁…as many of you know there’s going to be a next phase to this re-jig when we close for August. We will be closing over August to allow for the driveway to go back down - 😵‍💫 it’s been a long year without it.

Everything is slowly beginning to take shape now - so thank you all for your patience. It’ll all be very exciting when the whole site is finally finished 😁😅. Thanks to everyone who’s stuck with us 🙏.

FRESH BAGS OF HOMEGROWN LETTUCE
(while we have an abundance of produce)

For those of you who know me, you’ll know I’m happiest when in the garden 👩‍🌾!

Last year my lettuce all went to seed and this year we seem to have ended up with rather a lot of lettuce 🥬.
It’s homegrown, so not certified organic but it’s not been sprayed with any pesticides or anything else for that matter. So while we have some to spare I have picked, washed and bagged up some of our lovely EXTREMELY local lettuce for you guys.

They’re in washed repurposed plastic bags from various veg boxes we’ve had, we will happily take back the empty bags if you buy a bag ♻️.

We’re selling the lettuce for £1.50/100g.

Enjoy it while it’s here 😁🥬👩‍🌾
