This little lady is going through her Autumn moult, where hens naturally shed their old feathers and then grow new insulating ones ready for Winter!

To protect them from predators at night, the chickens have a fantastic secure run which is full of enrichment activities including tree branches for them to explore, grit pots to peck in, and a swing which they actually seem to really enjoy😂

Did you know that fresh eggs shouldn't be washed until you actually want to use them?

Eggs come with a natural protective coating called bloom. If eggs are washed, it removes the bloom which makes the eggs more susceptible to bacteria and shortens their shelf life considerably!

We carefully remove any obvious dirt from our fresh eggs before they go out for sale, but if you ever notice they aren't squeaky clean, this is the reason - just give them a quick wash right before you use them🥚

Autumn is moulting season🍂

Around the end of summer, hens go through the natural process where they shed old worn-out feathers and regrow a fresh, insulating set ready for winter!

During this time they look rather bedraggled and can reduce their egg laying quantity, as they put their energy into producing new feathers🪶

It can take around 4-12 weeks for them to finish their moult!
