We’ve done it again! For the second week in a row, Reading Bike Kitchen has raised over £2,000 for charity. At this past week's fundraising event, we raised an impressive £2,075 for Launchpad Reading, through the sale of our refurbished bikes.

A huge thank you as always to our hardworking volunteers for getting these bikes road-ready. We have plenty more bikes in the pipeline for next week, so please come down a buy a bike, and keep your donations coming!

We have a selection of refurbished bikes available at bargain prices, as detailed below. Our skilled volunteers are also here every Saturday for low-cost, drop-in repairs to help keep you riding.

This past week Reading Bike Kitchen raised £2225 for Macmillan Cancer Support through sales of refurbished bike donations. A huge thanks to our fabulous volunteers for the work they do in getting these ready. We have plenty more to keep us going and next week we will be fund raising for Launchpad Reading, so please help support us through donations and purchases.

One of our volunteers has been Cytech Technical Two Certified for years, and recently suggested that we should have other volunteers do this too. So last week another team member received his Cytech Technical Two Certification, after an intensive two-week training course in Oxford. We're also planning to send other volunteers on this training to get certified in the coming months.

But certified or not, our volunteers have many decades of experience to better help the cycling community!

This classic Peugeot road bike donation to Reading Bike Kitchen had broken off gear cable adjusters in the headtube stops. We drilled the old ones out, tapped the threads and fitted replacements. Well worth the effort as this should make a very nice bike when it’s finished.

This customer’s freewheel arrived at Reading Bike Kitchen with barely any use but freely spinning in both directions. Difficult and hardly worth the time to repair, most people couldn’t and wouldn’t disassemble it (note – it’s a FREEWHEEL, not cassette and freehub), but Reading Bike Kitchen’s undisputed best Belgium bike mechanic bothered. He cleaned up the pawls and springs, refurbished the dozens of tiny ball bearings and it’s like new now and saves money and waste. Top job!

This donation isn’t Reading Bike Kitchen’s bike of the week, but it’s worth a mention. It arrived in a very neglected state (a damaged rear axle, broken spokes, completely worn out five speed drivechain and only one useable cable). Far beyond economic repair. But using good, salvaged parts (rear axle, six speed freewheel, chain, derailleur and shifter) plus some new cables and three hours of effort, we overhauled the rear hub, fixed spokes, upgraded to six speed drivechain, replaced cables and gave it a good service. It’s now a sound recycled bike with a lot of use left it in. And all for £65!

We must be mad. We couldn’t do it without your donations of bikes and good components, and the dedication of our volunteer mechanics. Thank you.
