Quick check of the bees this morning in our home apiary.

All colonies looking really strong going into winter. Still a few honey supers to take off and then we’ll start treating for varroa and getting the bees ready for the next few months.

The splits we did a couple of months ago have all grown beautifully and we have high hopes for these to over winter nicely.

We’ll be moving these from the nursery apiary to the main apiary in the next week or so so we can look after the bees all in one place.

We finally found time to jar and label our 2025 autumn honey from our Trefforest Apiray.

It’s the first time we have ever taken an autumn honey from this apiary (it was a new site for us last year), and it really is a stunning honey.

We only took a small amount so we only have about 50 jars available.

Two of the swarms we caught a few months ago have been thriving in their garden nucs, and tomorrow they’re finally heading to their permanent home in Trefforest.

I’d hoped they’d all be tucked up for the night so I could close the boxes easily… but no — both colonies were having a full‑on late‑night party.
Suit on, head torch on, bees bouncing off the veil (they really don’t like torchlight), but they’re all safely closed up now and ready for the early‑morning move.

Took the summer crop from our home apiary this morning. Our most productive hive gave us five supers, all full of frames like this.

We usually get an autumn crop from now through to September and the bees are still bringing nectar in, but we really need rain soon. Without it, the flow will shut down and they won’t be able to make enough honey for us to take anything worthwhile while still leaving plenty for them to overwinter.

These nucs contain the splits we did a few weeks ago. They contain 8 new colonies (some of the boxes have dividers so contain two colonies). The other photo shows 2 of the splits looking lovely and strong and it’s great to see that all 8 splits have been successful.

These aren’t our first splits of the year, but what it means is we came out of winter with just 2 colonies — we had a dreadful winter where we lost most of our bees due to me having a broken foot and not being able to feed, treat or strap down.

This year has been about building our numbers back up, not honey production… though we do have a honey harvest to take.

With these splits thriving, we’re now heading into winter with over 20 strong colonies. A huge turnaround after a tough start to the year.
