๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—•๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜… are an easy and convenient way to increase forage / fibre intake. In the field, they are a 'less messy' alternative to hay, and in the stable they can be invaluable boredom busters.

Made from nothing but high-quality Timothy grass, MeadowBrix are free from molasses and any other binders or fillers.

These grass blocks often suit fussy feeders due to their natural palatability and they are suitable for all horse types, although we do not suggest them for older or dentally-challenged horses as they require good teeth for chewing.

To learn more about our forage Brix, which are also available in sainfoin and lucerne, head to the Simple System website or contact the Feed Line on 01728 604 008.

Congratulations to Mark Broadbent of Fenix Carriages on being elected Master of the Worshipful Company Coachmakers and Coach Harness Makers of London.

An extremely special honour, made even more so as this year is the 350th year of this active livery, supporting and investing in young people.

We couldn't think of a more skilled or passionate craftsperson for the role.

As always, we are proud to support the horses at Team Fenix with our Simple System feeds.

Why choose organic feed?

By offering organic feeds, we are promoting lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable land management - helping to protect the natural environment.

Organic farming standards dictate...

โœ… Almost 300 pesticides can be routinely used in non-organic farming and these can be present in non-organic food. By contrast, organic farming standards don't allow any synthetic pesticides and absolutely no herbicides, such as Glyposate. Organic farmers are permitted to use a small number of pesticides that are derived from natural ingredients, such as citronella and clove oil - but only under very restricted circumstances.

โœ… Artificial chemical fertilisers are strictly prohibited. Instead organic farmers develop healthy fertile soil by growing and rotating a mixture of crops, adding organic matter such as compost or manure and using plants like clover and now more frequently, legumes such as sainfoin, to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere.

โœ… All Simple System feeds are GM and preservative free. GM ingredients are banned under organic standards.

Organic farming is...

Organic farms are havens for wildlife - providing homes for bees, birds, butterflies and more. There is up to 50% more wildlife on organic farms.

Organic means working with nature, not against it. No other system of farming does more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, or to protect natural resources like fresh water and healthy soils.

The recent dry weather saw most pasture over-grazed looking bare. September has started with some rain, and this can be a good month to reseed very worn-out paddocks.

It is probably best to avoid ploughing as this destroys soil structure, making the ground more fragile and liable to poaching. It also exposes seeds buried in lower layers of soil, and these can include unwanted plants like ragwort.

It is usually best (and quicker as well as cheaper) to over sow. Give the ground a good harrowing to loosen the surface, broadcast or drill the seed and lightly roll it to get good contact between soil and seeds. At the very least, just hand broadcast seed on the worst areas.

Different soil and conditions suit different grasses, so get expert advice from a merchant like Cotswold Seeds, who are experts in all things seeds and also understand the requirements of horses and horse owners.

If your soil is out of sorts, adding a soil conditioner such as Simple System's ๐—ก๐—ฎ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ฐ๐—ธ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† can help balance pH and top up essential minerals.

Organic matter in the soil is important for healthy soil and thus healthy plants. Poo picking may help reduce worm burden and level of flies in summer, but constantly removing dung ultimately depletes the soil. Stack your dung and when it has rotted down, give it back to the land it came from. Your grass will thank you!

Ps. If you have missed our recent post, we're giving you the chance to WIN a 'paddock recovery kit' worth over ยฃ400!!! This includes a great electric fencing set up from StockShop - complete with an energiser, six bags of our soil conditioner - Natural Paddock Recovery, and a large bag of Natural Grazing Mix from Cotswold Seeds - which should cover 2 acres when re-seeding.

Whether the grass is in the paddock, or from a feed bag, it can vary greatly. Nutrition levels differ from season to season and even from night to day.

Simple System's range of grass pellets is grown and harvested to meet very strict nutritional specifications...

Red Bag Grass Pellets are essentially like spring grazing in a bag. They are high in protein and digestible energy. This makes them an excellent choice for hard-working competition horses and racehorses, as well as for breeding stock and their offspring.

๐ŸŒฑ Summer grazing is also nutritious, but it is less calorie-dense than spring grass. It is lower in protein and more fibrous.

๐Ÿ’™ Blue Bag Grass Pellets offer the equivalent of summer grazing and are ideal for horses in light or medium work, and for maintaining condition. They suit almost all horses and are a year-round best-seller.

๐ŸŒฑ Mature grass that has been allowed to grow to the โ€˜hay stageโ€™ is typically very high in fibre, low in sugar and low in starch making it a more suitable option for those prone to being overweight.

๐Ÿ’— HayCare is made from mature cut Timothy grass, so is suitable for good doers. It has nutrition levels likened to good quality, high fibre hay.

๐ŸŒฑ While HayCare is suitable for good doers, it is also frequently fed to those needing to gain condition. In circumstances where horses struggle to chew hay (such as older horses and youngstock undergoing dental changes), HayCare is an ideal choice to support their condition, alongside their usual Simple System feed.

If you'd like to discuss your horse's diet, contact the Feed Line for free, friendly advice on 01728 604 008, or email [email protected].
