What if the solar saving figures you rejected a few years ago no longer add up?
Falcon Trunking Systems Limited had looked at solar before. The payback was too long, so initially they walked away.

Then energy prices changed - and so they revisited the numbers, analysed how solar would perform against their actual half-hourly energy use – and the business case looked very different.

The result? A projected payback of under four years.

If you’ve previously ruled solar out, it might be worth running the numbers again. Read the Falcon Trunking case study here: https://rap-industrials.co.uk/casestudies/falcon-trunking-solar-installation/

WE'RE HIRING IN SHEFFIELD

Area Sales Representative – Sheffield & Surrounding Area

We’re looking for an experienced Area Sales Representative to join Jimmy Gilling and our team, developing new business and growing existing customer relationships across Sheffield and the surrounding area. This is a hybrid, field-based sales role suited to someone who knows how to build strong customer relationships, spot commercial opportunities and turn conversations into business.

What we’re looking for:
-Proven experience in a B2B sales role
-Good knowledge of Sheffield and the surrounding area
-Experience within PPE, abrasives or industrial supplies would be great, but not mandatory
-A confident, personable approach and the ability to develop long-term customer relationships
-Comfortable managing an existing customer base while actively identifying and winning new business
-Self-motivated and able to manage your own territory and sales activity

What we offer:
-Competitive salary, dependent on experience
-Pension
-Fuel allowance
-Hybrid/field-based working
-The opportunity to develop a strong sales territory with the backing of an established industrial business

We’re particularly interested in finding someone who knows the local market and enjoys getting out, meeting customers and developing business rather than simply managing accounts from behind a desk.

Interested? Get in touch with Jimmy in Sheffield to find out more.

We had a conversation with a customer recently about a piece of machinery they'd had for years. It was getting temperamental and their first thought was whether it was finally time to replace it.

But the machine itself wasn't really the problem - it was still doing the job they needed it to do. A few relatively small changes to the controls and some preventative maintenance meant they could keep it running without committing to a much bigger investment.

It's something we're seeing more of - replacing machinery isn't always the answer, particularly when budgets are tight and the existing equipment is fundamentally sound.

RAP's advice would be to look at what is actually causing the problem before assuming the whole thing needs replacing. Is it mechanical? Is it the controls?
Are obsolete components becoming difficult to source? Could a relatively small upgrade improve reliability or efficiency? And are you maintaining the equipment proactively, or waiting until something stops?

Sometimes investing in new machinery is absolutely the right decision.
But getting another five productive years out of something you've already paid for can be a pretty good return too.

A £100 component can become a very expensive problem

We had a customer recently who needed a relatively inexpensive component for a piece of production equipment. The component itself wasn't particularly significant, but without it, part of their production was going nowhere.
They needed it quickly.

Fortunately, we were able to identify what they needed, source it and get them moving again.

It's a good reminder that when you're running a manufacturing operation, the cost of a component isn't necessarily the important bit - it's the cost of not having it when you need it. A small part can mean lost production, engineers standing around, missed deadlines and potentially unhappy customers.

Our advice to manufacturers is to look at the parts and consumables that would genuinely cause you a problem if they weren't available tomorrow.
Which ones are critical? Do you keep spares? Does your supplier know what you use? And if something does fail, do you know who you're going to call?
A little bit of planning around critical spares can be considerably cheaper than an unexpected production stoppage.

The cost of running a factory is becoming ever more challenging...

Energy, labour, materials, maintenance and supply costs are all putting pressure on UK manufacturers and squeezing margins – and many of these costs are difficult to control.

That makes the costs that can be controlled increasingly important, like reducing energy consumption, generating power on site, avoiding unnecessary downtime and keeping critical spares available. These are the things that make the existing plant work harder and more efficiently.

When your margins are under pressure, small operational improvements across a factory can add up to very significant savings.

At RAP, we work with manufacturers on the practical things that keep the industry running – from industrial supplies and electrical equipment to automation, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
