Good morning! After a busy 6 weeks of Summer School, a solo quilt exhibition and greeting numerous holidaymakers to Rochester, this week feels like the start of a new season.

Plenty for us to catch up on - new collections are being added online, workshop samples are being sewn and staff are now catching up on holidays. Today I’m flying solo, but in between customers, I’m cutting autumnal fat quarters, expecting several deliveries, paying invoices and starting to think about our late summer sale (which I had delayed from June because of the heatwaves). Today is a 21 degrees and sunny - absolutely perfect weather for visiting us to plan a new project!

As a reminder we’re open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10-5, plus first Sundays 11-3 and of course always open online.

When you have a solo quilt exhibition, it’s nice to share it with others. So another busy afternoon today for Mavis and her quilting friends. Mavis says, “I just don’t want it to end…”

Sadly it must; there are 3 days left to enjoy ‘A Life in Stitches’ at Hometown. Friday and Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 11-3.

Shown here are ‘Home Run’, sewn by Mavis and quilted by and Blue Print sewn and quilted by Mavis.

We had a bumper crop of Loyalty Cards redeemed yesterday, with happy customers each getting a freebie. Don’t know how the scheme works?

Well, for every £15 you spend in store or online on qualifying purchases*, you’ll get a stamp on our loyalty card. And yes, it’s a physical card, as none of us needs yet another app on our phone! Take as long as you like to collect 10 stamps. The card is then dated and valid for 2 months. Don’t let it expire!

The full card can be redeemed for up to £15 off fabric, a book, pattern, jigsaw, jelly roll or layer cake (pretty cool, huh)?

If you are collecting online, there are details on the website (go to How to Shop Online page), for how to redeem.

* stamps are given on all purchases excluding gift cards, sale items, postage costs and workshops.

Are you a tidy quilter or someone that works best in creative chaos?

Mavis popped into her exhibition with friends yesterday and her answer to this burning question, “I know I should tidy up after each project, but I’m keen to get onto the next…”

If there’s anything else you want to ask Mavis, comment below and I’ll ask her…

(PS from Marion - In Mavis’s previous sewing space, there were piles of fabric and overflowing boxes of cloth, with pathways in between. 😳Now that she sews in the living room, with supplies kept elsewhere, it’s much tidier)! 😊

Hello to all nooks and crannies of the British Isles! 🇬🇧 North, south, east and west, our online orders are heading all over the place today. It’s lovely that you’re finding Hometown online and we can keep you supplied with fabrics and haberdashery.

Just recently, more parcels have been heading over the waters to the Channel Islands and Northern Ireland. 🚢 We like to think one quilter orders from us, then tells another about Hometown, so thank you to all of you acting as bush telegraph ambassadors.

And whilst we don’t post overseas now (pesky Brexit - don’t get me started), we love Monika in Hungary’s ingenuity 🇭🇺. She placed an order for Larking fat quarter bundles and we’ve posted them to her brother in Kent. Quilters will always find a solution!

Sunday - day of rest. My favourite day.

After a 6-day week, including one working day that finished at 2.30am 😳, I plan to not plan anything for today. Think I’ll just drink cups of tea, nap and watch some clouds. Hope you have some downtime too, today. x

X marks the spot; Oh, you mean the new exhibition at Hometown?

Our quilt exhibition opened today and the best comment must be from a visitor looking round all the quilts. “One person made all this?” Yes they did. The quiltmaker’s name is Mavis Haslam and I’m so proud that she is my mum.

Shown here are details from her ‘Blue Print’ quilt, sewn using men’s shirting fabric. For the story behind this quilt (and the other 40+ pieces on display), do come to Rochester this summer.

We open again on Saturday at 10 and the exhibition continues until 6 September.

Here but not here. Apologies to anyone that’s rattling the door today and is confused by seeing the lights on. Hometown is always open online if you’d like to look at fabric (and quite frankly, who wouldn’t?).

I’m downstairs and finishing prepping for Mavis’s exhibition which opens tomorrow. I woke up this morning with an idea for the exhibition 🙄, so seeing if I can make it happen. Honestly, what am I like?

‘My Life in Stitches’ opens Friday 21 August.
