🚨 Parents: did you know you can give them a mobile... and not the whole internet?
As many children get ready to move up to comprehensive school, one question seems to come up again and again from parents...
"Is there a basic phone that just does calls, WhatsApp and Google Maps, without all the social media and distractions?"
The good news is... you probably don't need to buy a special phone, and you can likely still use your old phone when you upgrade.
With around 10 minutes of setup, you can turn a standard smartphone into something much simpler.
📱 Android: Use Google Family Link to control which apps are available and manage screen time.
🍎 iPhone: Use Assisted Access to limit the phone to just the apps your child needs, such as Calls, WhatsApp, Google Maps, Calculator and Spotify.
The real advantage is that you're buying them a phone they can grow into.
As they get older and become more responsible, you can gradually unlock more apps and features, rather than buying them another device.
There's been a lot of discussion recently about banning social media for children. Whatever your view, you don't have to wait for new laws.
You can decide what is appropriate for your own child today, giving them the safety and independence of having a phone while introducing more features at a pace you're comfortable with.
Technology doesn't have to be all or nothing. A little proactive setup can make a huge difference.
Hopefully this helps a few parents over the summer!
