Iβve been thinking about Halloumi a lot lately. Itβs hard to believe itβs nearly been a whole year since we lost her π
We originally rescued Halloumi from someone who had rescued her from being used as snake food. Within 24 hours, we noticed she was very different from our other teddy piggy, Teacake. She had large stiff feet that barely moved and much finer, softer fur than a typical teddy coat.
After doing more research recently, we now believe Halloumi was likely a satin guinea pig. Satin piggies still have the same plush teddy coat, but the hairs are hollow which gives them a softer reflective look. Sadly, this genetic mutation can also cause Satin Syndrome, where their bodies struggle to absorb and process calcium properly.
Over time this can lead to weakened bones, spinal problems, fragile jaws that make eating difficult and sadly much shorter lifespans. Many satin piggies donβt even make it past 2 years old, so the fact Halloumi made it a few months past her second birthday shows how strong she really was.
Looking back now, it explains so many things we noticed over the years. The way she rested her head on the food bowl while eating, the loud chomping, the little clumsy walks and the noticeable M-shape forming in her back.
Sadly there isnβt much that can be done for guinea pigs with spinal problems. We took her to the vets multiple times over the years, but surgery would have been far too risky and painful. Our vet actually documented her history because he had sadly seen birth defects before in piggies bred for snake food.
In the end, all we could really do was manage her pain and love her as much as possible.
And she truly was loved π
Despite her chronic health problems, Halloumi had a beautiful life filled with fresh veggies, cuddles with her loving husboar Mr Whippy, licking your hand for peaflakes and little happy trots when she had the energy. Her tiny jelly belly wobbling while she walked will always stay in my heart.
We miss her deeply every single day, but Iβm so grateful we were able to give her safety, comfort and love for the time she had with us πΉπ
