Kreigsmarine hand-held 1941 pattern brass Gimbel Compass to U244. The compass measures 9cm across and 5cm deep. The magnetic compass is mounted on a three stage gimbel and what it was used for is a bit of a mystery. It may have been used on surface watch, or for rescue or may even be a personalised gift to an officer. On the lid is a Kreigsmarine Eagle over a U-Boat over the number U244. On the clasp is a sw****ka. Underneath are the numbers 1941 over 57802.

U-boat 244 was a type V11. Which was laid down on 24th October 1942 at the Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft yard at Kiel and was launched on 2nd September 1943 and commissioned on 9th September under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Ruprecht Fischer. In the four known patrols it sank no ships that were recorded and she surrendered to the allies on the 14th May 1945. She was scuttled by Gunfire off the north coast of Ireland.

WWII German M36 vehicle-mounted ammunition can, specifically designed for the MG34 and MG42 machine guns. These tins held the 50-round non-disintegrating metal ammunition belts. The unique sloped design allowed it to fit securely in armored vehicles (like half-tracks, tanks, or other mounts), while the hinged lid and latch kept the belt protected but ready for quick feeding into the gun.

The Normandy camouflage paint is a fantastic detail—many of these were repainted in the field, so surviving original camo finishes are scarce.

The condition looks very good considering its age - there’s some rust and wear, but the latch, hinge, and structure all look intact.

These tins are much rarer than the standard straight-sided 50-round ammo cans, making them sought-after among WWII collectors.
