It’s not long now until our first crochetalong from Animal Fables will begin!

This crochetalong has been chosen and planned with beginners in mind so that you can master all the basics of 3D crochet. That said there’s still plenty of interest and possible customisation that will hold the attention of even the most experience TOFTer!

To join in you will need a copy of the book Crochet Fairy Tales: Animal Fables and your chosen yarn, or alternatively Little Pig kits are also available individually with your choice of colours.

Which pig are you going to choose? The one who quickly threw together his house from straw, the one who made his house from sticks, or the cunning third pig who carefully built his house from bricks 🧱?

Introducing Verso the Jackson’s Chameleon, very aptly on the official publication day of Crochet Fairy Tales: Animal Fables 🐻🍾

I designed Verso for our celebrations to symbolise the last five years of TOFT. She is made in our most recently introduced shades of yarn: Chive and Kale. Technically challenging with short row shaping and invisible rows, and then embellished with spikes, horns and embroidery, she has the detail seen in my most recent designs. In her patch design she is reminiscent of a magical dragon, curled up with a good book containing stories of a fairy tale land.

Ame Verso of David and Charles is responsible for Edward’s Menagerie getting published in way that it did. Although I had self-published some designs the year before, it would never have become the much-loved bestseller that it did without her influence. Expanding the patterns to 40, including pictures of my baby, Edward, and creating stories for each animal pushed me further than I would have gone myself, and created a book that means far more than a crochet pattern book to a great many people (myself included). The crochet Fairy Tales series has been created under Ame’s watchful eye back at D&C, and it has been a pleasure to have full creative freedom and allow my magical crocheted wings to soar on these three titles. A big thank you to Ame for changing my (and TOFT’s) path in 2013. 💚

Stock is now very limited: we have two alpaca kits and just three shades left as individual balls. This yarn is 100% baby alpaca, created exclusively from the fleeces of our alpacas here at HQ, Warwickshire. Totally undyed and unbleached, these shades are blended microbatches spun to a double knit weight that can be used across all TOFT patterns.

Introducing Marita and the 2016-2020 years!

Bold, energetic and colourful, this five years was a huge growth period for TOFT as the new pure wool yarn hit our shelves properly in a full range of naturals and brights and this enables us to stock kits into other shops for the first time. 📚 The books kept coming as I just kept running with my new passion for crochet. Swipe to read more on the final slide.

So who is Marita? A huge influence on early TOFT history and the woman who enabled me to begin to import alpaca products from Peru. A truly lovely lady with a big heart and the person I’ve been working with the longest who still helps create our fluffy Pom Poms.

Don’t forget to download the pattern FREE this bank holiday weekend.

Albert the Parson’s chameleon represents the 2011-2015 period of TOFT history. For me these five years are probably the most significant in the forming of the company and what we are known for today. In 2012 I watched a video to learn to crochet and within a couple of weeks had created Edward’s Menagerie! 🐘🐖🐐🐈🫏🦏

Albert is named after the very talented and endlessly enthusiastic wood turner who created the original TOFT wooden buttons. Turned from the shed in the back garden of his Warwickshire home, if you are lucky enough to have one of those original buttons with a hand-etched ‘TOFT’ on the front then turn it over and you’ll find the name of the wood type on the back.

In 2012 I had a baby, mastered the double crochet stitch and then went on to write my first book, Edward’s Menagerie that was published in 2014. Alongside this we had started to run out of alpaca fibre to supply the growing demand for TOFT yarn, and so I began the move to processing the first pure wool batches of yarn on our shelves today. Having thoroughly caught the crochet bug I swiftly moved on to Edward’s Menagerie: Birds, and with that came the first six bright shades of yarn - two of which are represented in Albert’s design, Lime and Pink. 🌈

On his patch Albert rides a crochet hook, capturing this important era of TOFT history when I swapped by knitting needles for crochet hook and didn’t really look back!

Download the pattern FREE this weekend, and just ask us for Albert if you’d like a FREE patch inside your order.

How to capture the first five years of TOFT history in one chameleon? 🤔 Swipe to read about where it all began in the years 2006-2010.

It was actually easier than I thought to decide that the original TOFT patch would need to be based on mine (if you’ve collected me in Lime or Yellow or the years she’ll sit perfectly alongside).

Complete with a knitted cable hat to represent the origin of The Toft Alpaca Shop, originally a ready-to-wear company where I worked alongside a team of home knitters to make hats to sell at fairs and markets. Of course the iconic TOFT wooden button had to be there. Created for the original felted Bulb Bag design and used as coasters in craft rooms across the country ever since!

🦎 Fun extra fact: I’ve always just been a ‘chameleon’ until now with the species never stated, but very pleased to have this all cleared up with the introduction of the others! Always good to be able to get this nerdy 🤓

Although kits for these sold out very early in our weekend, you can download the pattern FREE, and we do still have some homegrown alpaca yarn left. I’d recommend the ‘Camel’ shade (you’ll need two balls) , and then knit the hat in 25g of our standard DK wool.

🦙 Great to see so many Kerry the Chameleons jumping on your hooks this weekend and in beautiful undyed natural colours. Patches are FREE in orders this weekend, designs allocated randomly unless you specify in NOTES which you would like when you order. 😊
