Fire extinguishers.
There are 5 types of extinguishers. The different types are Water - Red label, Foam - Cream label, CO2 - Black label, Wet chemical - Yellow label and Powder - Blue label and these are split into classes.
Class A - Solids (e.g. wood, plastic and paper) - You can use powder, foam or water
Class B - Flammable liquids (e.g.solvents, paints and fuels) - You can use powder, foam or CO2
Class C - Gases (e.g. butane, propane and LPG) - You can use powder
Class D - Metals (e.g. lithium and magnesium) You can use powder
Class E - Electrical - (e.g. computers and TV's) You can use powder or CO2
Class F - Cooking Oils (e.g. cooking fat and olive oil) You can use wet chemical.
You must ensure your fire extinguishers are labelled correctly and serviced annually but you should also do a visual check once a month to ensure no damage has come to the extinguisher.

An important safety measure to use (especially in kitchen areas) is a fire blanket. You want to ensure you have a fire blanket that is real and not fake as many that you find online are not safely regulated.

What is it made of?
A fire blanket is made of two layers of intricately woven glass fiber fabric and an inner layer that's made of fire-retardant film. Fire blankets work very effectively by cutting off the supply of oxygen (which the fire needs to burn) and smothering the fire.

How do you store them?
Fire blankets are kept in wall-mounted cases or pouches, ensuring easy access during a fire emergency. It's important to position them within or near the kitchen area but maintain a safe distance from potential fire hazards. Place them in a clearly marked and easily visible spot on the wall.

Fire blanket standards and testing
The current standard for fire blankets is BS EN 1869:1997/2019 and this covers a variety of sizes, usually square, from 1.0m x 1.0m to a maximum of 1.8m x 1.8m.

You want to ensure you do not buy a fake one. the usual tell tale signs are:
- misspelt labels and
- references to incorrect standards or BSI Kitemark numbers.

As seen in recent news an Oxford Hotel owner has been fined £20,000 for breaching 6 fire safety regulations which put the lives of guests in danger. Some of the safety risks included:
- The fire alarm and emergency systems not working,
- A lack of fire risk assessment,
- A lack of adequate fire-resistant structure between the ground floor takeaway and sleeping accommodation above.
The council noted that the premises were “considered so dangerous that inspectors issued an immediate prohibition notice preventing sleeping in the property until fire safety measures were improved”.

This is why us here at FirPro offer Fire risks assessments, fire alarm service and fire door inspections to ensure these regulations are followed and the safety of everyone who comes into your establishment.

Do not forget Fire risk assessments and Fire door inspections should be completed regularly to keep your establishment safe.
