I'm in the middle of making a few pieces for the new bridal jewellery collection at the moment. I'm loving stringing with a colour other than white, the black silk adds depth and a great contrast to the texture of the organic freshwater pearls.
Hand knotting has been used to string pearls for thousands of years. Pearls are soft, porous gemstones, so hand knotting spaces the pearls slightly apart preventing them from rubbing together and damaging the lustre. Traditionally the silk matches the colour of the pearls, but I liked the idea of switching up a traditional technique and adding a contrasting colour.
It takes a little practice, the key is positioning the needle exactly where you need the knot and making sure it doesn't slip, but once you get into the swing of the technique it becomes second nature.
