Like so many gardeners, I was saddened to hear of the death of David Austin this week.

For over 20 years I’ve grown David Austin roses, admiring their exceptional beauty, rich colours and unmistakable fragrance. They have marked some of life’s most special occasions too, from the roses in my wedding flowers to the plants I was given to celebrate the births of my children, which still bloom in the garden today.

It felt especially fitting that this week I used two of my favourite David Austin varieties, Shropshire Lad and Jubilee, when creating funeral wreaths. Their beauty and scent brought a quiet elegance to such meaningful tributes.

David Austin’s roses have become part of countless gardens and cherished memories. His legacy will continue to bloom for many years to come.

The Old English roses are looking particularly beautiful at Pudding Field Flowers this week.
Growing in the softest sorbet shades of blush, peach, apricot and cream, these exquisitely perfumed roses are among my favourite flowers to use in my funeral floristry work.
There is something incredibly comforting about incorporating garden grown roses into natural funeral flowers. Their gentle fragrance, romantic character and seasonal beauty bring a softness and authenticity that perfectly suits a heartfelt farewell.
At Pudding Field Flowers, I create bespoke funeral flowers inspired by the English garden, using carefully selected seasonal blooms. These Old English roses add a timeless elegance to casket sprays, funeral wreaths and natural funeral tributes, helping to create arrangements that feel personal, meaningful and connected to nature.
Using flowers grown here in the garden allows me to offer sustainable funeral flowers that celebrate the seasons while reflecting the unique life being remembered.
If you are looking for English garden, natural funeral flowers, or bespoke funeral floristry, I would be honoured to help create something truly special.
Pudding Field Flowers: natural, seasonal funeral flowers inspired by the beauty of the English garden.
Roses used are Queen of Sweden, Claire Austin, Lichfield Angel and Margaret Merril

There’s something so special about seeing lilacs burst into bloom just as the narcissi and tulips fade away. I feel incredibly lucky to have several large, mature shrubs, and even more on the way after planting new one’s last year
Their fragrance is simply gorgeous. That soft, calming scent comes from linalool, a natural compound also found in lavender, known for its relaxing effect.
From delicate pinks to rich purples, soft mauves to creamy whites (and even the rare yellow!), lilacs bring such beautiful variety. With over 1,000 varieties, there’s always something new to fall in love with.
They’re not just a treat for us either, lilacs attract butterflies and hummingbird moths, adding even more life and movement to the garden
Cut stems, are just stunning in arrangements.
Lilacs have long been a symbol of first love… and honestly, it’s easy to see why.
