This week I have beautiful blooms from a type of iris I rarely see in garden centres, and I don’t know why. Similar to Dutch iris, these are known as English irises. Iris latifolia. This particular one is a fabulous blue. They grow from bulbs, as Dutch iris do, so they take up very little space. I have mine in pots at the moment, and will plant them out in the borders after they have finished flowering and hopefully they will flower well again next year.
I mostly feature irises I have grown myself so any queries about these plants I will be happy to answer.

My spuria irises have started flowering this week. This golden yellow and brown iris is called spiced tea.

Both of our native British irises are flowering now. Iris pseudacorus, which grows in the shallow water at the edge of ponds, and Iris foetidissima, which grows anywhere, dry or moist, sun or shade. Iris foetidissima can have primrose yellow flowers marked with brown (pictured) or with purple overlaid on top of the yellow/brown blooms.

These are the flowers of Iris pseudacorus ‘Variegata’. Beautiful golden yellow blooms, and the foliage is still stunning. After flowering and later in the summer the leaf variegation will fade a little and look less striking but a great addition to any water feature. The variegation means this version is less vigorous than the native Iris pseudacorus which is suitable for large ponds and not for small water features.

This last week, the last week in May, more tall bearded cultivars have started to bloom. Two unusual coloured varieties are particularly striking, Copatonic and Good Show. Some tall bearded varieties haven’t started to flower yet, and some intermediates haven’t either.

This year is astonishing weather wise. My dwarf irises were late, by about 2/3 weeks, not starting until the beginning of May. Temperatures had been lower than usual. A week later some intermediates came out at about the time I would expect, first half of May. And in the 3rd week in May the tall bearded irises came out. Often they don’t start for me until the last week in May or the first week in June. These timings are for where I live and are later than most other areas. Most surprisingly of all, I have dwarf, intermediate, AND tall bearded irises out all at the same time. So
I have been able to take a photograph with all 3 types in the same photo. It’s a first for me and I will be surprised if it happens again. Normally if the season is late then all the blooming is held up by about the same amount. This year the season has ‘concertinaed’ Standard dwarf bearded ‘Oda Mae’, medians ‘Imperative’ and ‘Performer’, with tall bearded ‘Amadora’, ‘Mariposa Autumn’ and ‘Patina’.

Last week more intermediate irises came out. And some tall bearded irises. This is early for my tall bearded varieties. These two are Mariposa Autumn and Rosalie Figge. Both are rebloomers flowering now which will flower again in September/October.

This week, the second week in May, the intermediate irises have started to flower. I’ve picked a stem from each of the intermediates that have started to flower and made a rainbow. From left to right they are Cranapple, seedling, Holidaze, Maui Moonlight, Whiteladies, Honeyplic, I’ll Be Back, Amherst Blue, Mary Constance, Peggy Chambers, Starwoman, Hymke and Imperative. Then I did two vases, one with the red/orange/yellow end of the spectrum and the other vase with the blue/indigo/violet end of the spectrum. Just for fun.

Not everything has to have flowers to contribute to a garden. This iris is the variegated form of our native Iris pseudacorus. It’s a water iris which grows naturally in pond margins and needs moisture to thrive. So I grow it in a “mini-pond”, a container with no holes in it. This container was made for me and is rusty metal but any container without holes will work just as well. Later in the summer it will have golden yellow flowers. One thing to remember is this iris is quite vigorous and will suit larger ponds but in a small pond will need managing so that is doesn’t outgrow it’s space.

This past week I have had my first bearded irises in flower. Ruby Eruption, Experiment, and Wizards Return. The first week in May is the latest I have ever know the dwarf beardeds start to flower. It’s more usual that they come into flower in the second week in April so this year the season for me is at least two weeks late, but I notice that there are lots of buds coming, on the dwarfs, intermediates AND the tall/miniature tall bearded irises. That means it’s going to be a compact season and although the dwarfs were held up by the cold early spring the tall beardeds are likely to flower at their normal time.
