We had a fantastic lecture from Michael King this afternoon, discussing E. M. Forster’s ‘A Room with a View’. It was wonderful to see some new faces amidst our regulars in our Reading Room space. Everyone is welcome to attend these talks - whether it’s an entirely new text for you or an old favourite we promise you’ll leave enriched! Book future sessions at the link in our bio 📚

Our Breakfast Book Club convenes on the first Sunday of each month, before the shop opens its doors to the day. It has become one of our most cherished gatherings—warm, convivial, and quietly animated by a shared love of reading.

There is no prescribed text; instead, conversation unfolds organically as each person speaks to what they have been reading—fiction and non-fiction alike—offering reflections, discoveries, and the occasional persuasive recommendation. It is a generous exchange of reading lives, where tastes intersect and new curiosities are sparked.

For us, as booksellers, it is a particular pleasure: to listen, to learn, and to witness books doing precisely what they ought—bringing people together in thoughtful, lively company.

This photograph captures a glimpse of today’s conversation—an engaging tableau of the books that shaped the morning. Within them, one can spot firm favourites returning with quiet authority, enduring classics, and the presence of compelling new work. Together, they reflect the breadth of our readers’ tastes and the lively, ever-evolving nature of the discussion. Happy Sunday.

We very much look forward to welcoming you next month—early booking is warmly encouraged to secure a place.

Some of what we’ve been reading:

We have been reading some incredible works of literature recently and wanted to share some of our favourite recent reads.

Joe – She Who Remains by Rene Karabash – I have been working my way through the International Booker Prize shortlist and was blown away by She Who Remains. Having read Broken April by Ismail Kadare last year, I was somewhat familiar with the ancient laws of the Kanun which dictate life in the Accursed Mountains. She Who Remains explores the same themes, but employs a more poetic and yet more concise writing style. This is a really amazing (and devastating) little novel that we are proud to have chosen to discuss for our June Text Book Club.

Joe – Dream Story by Arthur Schnitzler – First published 100 years ago, Dream Story is the novella which inspired Stanley Kubrick’s magnum opus Eyes Wide Shut. A fascinating, haunting and cerebral work of fiction exploring the passions and secret desires of its characters, this is a story that can be interpreted in many ways. Schnitzler was a friend of Sigmund Freud and shared his fascination with dreams and the underlying meanings behind the human subconscious. A wonderful psychological and quietly erotic masterpiece.

Joe – Fup: A Modern Fable by Jim Dodge – A book that really took me by surprise. Quirky in all the right ways, this story follows three characters: two humans and a duck who has a taste for homebrew whiskey. Despite its short length (just 119 pages) there was an unexpected level of emotional depth. The relationships between the characters were complex and heart-warming, while the frequent sprinkles of intelligent humour helped to to create a well-rounded fable which told the story of a family, and consequently told the story of a slice of American life.

May Events

With genuine pleasure, we unveil our programme for May—a month poised delicately between the last brightness of spring and the first intimations of summer. As the days lengthen and the light lingers, there is, perhaps, no finer occupation than to sit with a book, and then to gather in thoughtful company to speak of it.

MAY EVENTS:

Sun 3rd (10–11am) – Breakfast Book Club

Wed 6th (6–9.30am) – 6AM Writing Club

Wed 6th (2–4pm) – Poetry Afternoon with lecturer Michael King: Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Wed 13th (10am–3pm) – Gathered: A Bibliotherapy Retreat with Nicole Moody – Sold Out

Wed 13th (7–8.30pm) – Get Into Reading: A Journey Through Genres with Oliver Bolland: Fantasy – Last Few Tickets

Sun 17th (10–11am) – Text Book Club: Seascraper by Benjamin Wood

Wed 20th (2–4pm) – Prose Afternoon with lecturer Michael King: A Room with a View by E. M. Forster

Thurs 28th (7–8pm) – Classics Book Club: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

We would be delighted if you might join us for any of these gatherings. There is a particular pleasure in reading alone, but an equal, perhaps greater, pleasure in returning to a text in conversation—testing its meanings, sharing its echoes, and discovering anew what it has to offer.

Tickets for all events are available via the Events page on our website, or may be purchased in-store.

Last evening, we had the pleasure of supporting an event at St Albans Cathedral, where Dr Janina Ramirez, bestselling author of FEMINA, spoke on her remarkable book, Legenda: The Real Women Behind the Myths That Shaped Europe. It was, in every sense, electric—an atmosphere alive with curiosity and wonder. Her talk reminded us that history is not a fixed, orderly record, but something far more vivid: strange, intricate, and at times astonishing beyond invention.

Afterwards, Dr Ramirez gave her time with great generosity, meeting attendees and sharing in their enthusiasm for her work. There was a rare warmth in those exchanges—a sense of scholarship not held at a distance, but offered openly, inviting others in.

A particularly moving moment came as she recognised just how deeply her work resonates, not least with our own bookseller, Laura, whose admiration speaks to the profound reach of Legenda.

It remains a privilege to collaborate with the exceptional team at St Albans Cathedral—a place, and a partnership, that continues to foster evenings of genuine intellectual and cultural vitality.

April’s weather has offered a glorious, much-needed reminder of the pleasures of being outdoors — long light, blossom, and a renewed appetite for books carried into gardens, parks, and sunny corners.

After a lovely Easter pause, we are delighted to return to a particularly rich run of events here at Books on the Hill 📚

This Sunday 12th brings our Breakfast Book Club — always one of the most convivial mornings in the month, with lively conversation, fresh recommendations, and the irresistible curiosity of hearing what everyone has been reading lately. We are also quietly wondering whether sunshine changes reading habits… perhaps lighter pages, longer novels, or simply books best enjoyed outdoors ☕📖

On 15th April, our Afternoon Lecture turns to The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman — a remarkable and unsettling text, widely regarded as an early landmark of American feminist literature, not least for its striking treatment of women’s mental health in the nineteenth century.

Also on the 15th, our Get Into Reading series explores the classics — with the cheerful aim of dismantling the old myth that classic literature must be difficult or forbidding. So often these works remain startlingly immediate, intimate, and recognisable.

Our Text Book Club on 19th April will discuss Silence by Shusaku Endo — a profound work of historical fiction, and one of literature’s most searching meditations on doubt, fellowship, and enduring faith.

On 24th April, we have two Bibliotherapy sessions:
In the morning: Reading Plays for Wellbeing — a course that uses dramatic texts not only to explore character and theme, but also as a way of reflecting on emotion, behaviour, and our own lived experience 🎭
In the afternoon: Advanced Bibliotherapy — a deeper exploration of how books may be thoughtfully curated to help address some of life’s more complex questions. No previous attendance required; all are warmly welcome.

Our Classics Book Club on 30th April turns to Catch-22 by Joseph Heller — hilarious, tragic, razor-sharp, and still unmatched in its satire of military absurdity and human survival.

Wishing everyone a splendid Easter bank holiday weekend.

Tomorrow the shop will be closed while we retreat for some much-needed rest after a particularly full and happy week — thank you, as always, to our wonderful customers.

The day ahead is likely to consist of books, chocolate, and doing very little at all, which feels entirely deserved.

We look forward to welcoming you again on Wednesday.

March at the bookshop has been full of early mornings, lively conversations, and literary journeys.

We began with Breakfast Book Club ☕📖 — a relaxed gathering for sharing current reads and beloved books — followed by our newly popular 6am Writing Club, where local writers welcomed the day together as the light changed across the shop.

Michael King first guided us through the poetry and lives of the Brontë sisters, and today returns to lead us through Dubliners by James Joyce, bringing both afternoons vividly to life 📚✨

Oliver Bolland’s Journey Through Genres took us into science fiction — from Frankensteins fictional tale to nonfiction and book The Importance of Being Interested- Adventures in Scientific Curiosity— asking what literature imagines about the future and ourselves.

Book Club gathered around The Position of Spoons by Deborah Levy, with one thought lingering above all: notice what you notice.

Still to come: historian Joanne Paul on Thomas More and back instore Classics Book Club discussing One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez — a novel of miracles, memory, and Macondo 🌿

Please see our website or ask instore for details and tickets.
