PAINTINGS BY MARTIN EVANS

Throughout his life Martin kept changing course, discovering new materials and techniques to work them. But painting was a constant, he always had at least one on the go and towards the end of his life many days were spent in “Fig Tree Cottage” a glorified shed in his garden where he would paint for hours while taking in the sights and sounds, this was his sanctuary, his happy place.

You can view and buy these paintings along with many other original creations at our Martin Evans Memorial Retrospective Exhibition

Open 10am-5pm mon-sat until the 21st of October.
They will also be available to buy online later today.

ABSTRACT FIGURE/ Sea green, blue glass & silver leaf.

A gorgeous example of Martin’s abstract figures. Martin was heavily inspired by the Giacometti brothers work. This is one of the larger pieces he sculpted hot in the iron, 27cm tall, 2kg solid glass.

The silver leaf on the outside surface has reacted with the coloured glass powders to create a rich varied patina.

TEXTILES/FASHION

Martin was from the make do and mend generation. Aside from repairing clothes he also created his own and even one or two dresses for the lovely ladies in his life. As a young shipwright touring on the Royal Yacht in Japan he procured some brocade with a plan to make his Mother a dress but sadly she died before Martin returned home.

Eventually Martin made a dress and it was obviously beautiful as it ended up being worn as a wedding dress no less! by Martin’s, soon to be, sister in law. Still trying to find the pictures of said dress, will share soon! There is a pic of mum, smoking of course, with my sister a forrest and mum is wearing another dress made by dad!

Below you can see one of the many colourful flags Martin made for his studio.

The T-shirts are from many moons ago, the Isle of Wight was one of many produced for the island tourism market and the other I’m wearing in the portrait, I wore it proudly to countless parties and events and always got plenty of comps! Both printed on a homemade 4x silk screen press, this was way back in the early 90s before Glory Art Glass, dad’s company was called “Northcourt Originals” Northcourt being the name of our home where he had a basement and several sheds where he worked.

WOOD CARVINGS

Martin loved to work with wood. One of his earliest memories was asking for an electric guitar for his birthday and instead of getting the guitar he was gifted a fret saw and some balsa wood. Sure enough he made his first guitar! Onwards and throughout his life Martin furnished and maintained his home with kitchen cabinets, seating, toys, tools etc etc quite often from reclaimed wood. He was a womble and loved to work with found objects and materials.
